New battery tech has allowed smartphones to be slimmer but it looks like customers would rather have thicker phones with much larger batteries. These slim phones, at least most of them, come at the cost of now expectedly basic features.

Manufacturers and journalists tend to lie about thinness when actually camera bumps create thickness. The allegedly thinner the device the more prominent the camera bump is. I prefer thickness to 8.5mm avoiding any camera bump.

Customers have been wanting bigger batteries for decades. It was manufacturer PR trying to push thinner phones because manufacturers knew one of the biggest reasons why people upgrade phones is their batteries aren't lasting. Bigger batteries mean people keep their old phones longer. Thinner phones with smaller batteries means people will upgrade sooner (both from the smaller battery not lasting a day and the heat from other components killing the battery faster)

Flip phones are actually quite popular in asia. It's one of the few places the flip phone market continued even after smartphones.
