Tensor G5: Google Pixel 10 series chipset said to be yet another underwhelming performer

Google is set to launch the Pixel 10 series later in the year. The phones will be powered by the Tensor G5—the first chipset in the lineup to be built by TSMC instead of Samsung—and while some would expect that switch to come with massive performance upgrades, word on the grapevines indicates the contrary.

Somewhat disappointing.  Sticking with Pixel, though.  With trade-ins and discounts, I'm averaging between $300-$400 per phone/year, which is acceptable for me, given the ancillary benefits.

With the mediocre history of Google Tensor starting in it's 2021 debut after ditching Qualcomm snapdragon, the upcoming Tensor G5 mediocrity compared to the competition is no surprise. It seems Google is not out to produce a premium phone even though they charge a premium price. If only Google had returned to using Qualcomm chips and powered their upcoming Pixel 10 pro LX with the upcoming snapdragon 8 Elite 2 only then would I be interested in buying it. Google Pixel and Tensor disappoints again.

The obsession with performance on a phone is ridiculous. In the real world only dolts that waste their lives playing games all day will notice. Much longer battery life (SiC batteries please), better quality camera sensors, lenses, more storage, 12GB RAM, 120Hz screen are the main concerns. G5 will be plenty fast enough. Qualcomm is in a stupid race with no one to raise clocks and power consumption and temperatures through the roof just to try and keep up with Apple.

I agree completely. I almost never hear complaints about day-to-day performance of Tensor Pixels. There were issues with battery life and overheating in early generations, but those issues have been mostly addressed. Benchmarks are for gamers and spec chasers, and articles like this are clickbait for that group.

Google is right to avoid the tail wagging the dog and just build their phones for how the vast majority of owners use them.

The P10 will again be more capable than most people need.

I have been a Pixel owner since the Pixel 2. My wife loves her Pixel. Even with the intro of the Tensor on the Pixel 6, performance didn't suffer in every day use. Yes, there were some battery issues and heat issues early on, but as someone else mentioned those have been mitigated and eliminated. The big problem from the 6, 7 and 8 series was the modem and they have fixed that as well. Qualcomm is chasing big numbers, no more and no less. Well, people don't care about benchmarks. 95% of people who buy phones care about real world performance in their day to day lives outside of gaming. If you told those 95% about UFS 4.0, they would have no clue what you're talking about. Does the phone work? Yeah? Great. Those are the majority of people buying phones.

Pixel 9 Pro/XL was phone of the year for a lot of tech reviewers. Pixel market share tripled with the Pixel 9 series in the US from 4% to 12%. According to you, they aren't doing it right because benchmarks disappoint. According to sales, real world tech reviewers and satisfied customers, they are doing everything right. Chasing benchmarks doesn't win you market share in the real world when the majority of phone buyers have no clue what you're even talking about. If you want gaming, buy a gaming phone. It's the same as buying a gaming computer compared to an office computer.

Have owned a Pixel 7 Pro and Pixel 9 Pro.  Both phones were 100% hassle free.  I plugged them in either at the end of the day for heavy use, or every other day for light use.  Having security updates quickly is important for me.  Never noticed a performance issue, although the geek in me wants better performance on my main daily app driver: Firefox.

Google has treated me with respect throughout my relationship with the company, which is not something I can say for Apple(condescension), Samsung(built-in app ads) or Microsoft(Even more ads).

Besides being a mere 'smart phone' and silly small screen, WTH cares if one chipset gives 1-10 more or less FPS than some other one?

Who REALLY plays action/competitive games on their smart phone anyway?

It is all just a bunch of Capitalistic Marketing Kool Aid where only the 'highest performing' thing is useful while everything else is trash!! LOL!!!

Meanwhile, most folks actually CARE about how long a device runs away from a charger and how long it may get software update support.

Started with Pixel 2, them went to 5...which fell in the Atlantic in the Bahamas and torched out. I now have a 6 and use it ALL THE TIME.  Never have issues.  Pixels have always been rock solid.  Since Google is going to keep updating Android security for 6s,I may keep this one until the 11s are released.
