A couple of days ago, de8auer posted a video showing the four dies in the Threadripper 1950X sanded down to reveal the silicon printing. This proved that the two "dummy dies" did contain proper Zen cores. Over the weekend a senior AMD staff member responded with what could be expected of the extra dies and why they were present.

DAFUK?

That's like a jet engineer claiming two of the four engines are active while the other two are duds. So other than its ridiculous physical appearance the Threadripper has absolutely no reason to be a massive rectangle. Wonder if we can chop the lower half then or fuse two chopped off Threadrippers together and create a Frankenmonster processor.
