The 108 MP sensor on the Samsung Galaxy S11+ won't be the same one on the Mi Note 10

The Mi Note 10 was released last month and has the honor of being the first mainstream with a 108 MP camera. The Samsung Galaxy S11+ will also sport a 108 MP sensor but it will not be the same one on the Mi Note 10. It will be a newer, better sensor.

That's not exactly true though, P20P, the first model with IMX600, was really crappy in real life practice. I was competitive in DxO Fantasyland, to be exact.
Meanwhile in DxO Fantasyland Oppo Reno 10x got 116, the same as P30P. I don't believe it exactly matches P30P, a point or two lower would sound more like it, but nor do I believe P30P deserved that high in the first place.

How the leaker put emphasis that it's not HMX really surprised me. A different binning method could make sense, but then renaming this sensor just because of different binning doesn't sound so plausible.
A different CFA could also make sense, with a different name. But it wouldn't look so good on Samsung's face if they just do RYYB which would be copying Sony for the second time in a row, if it's legal in the first place. There are many other potential solutions though, like Fuji's X-trans...or quad-X-trans?

Yes, the P20 Pro isn't quite the amazing camera phone most reviewers at the time claimed it was. But it's hard to argue with the fact that it pushed the industry forward. Really brought great night-time photography to the table, while still being a decent camera phone.

I used to own Mate 10 Pro and while it was a pretty good shooter, it was also quite a bit worse than the P20 Pro. So, yeah, I'd say around the P20 Pro is when Huawei caught up with Samsung at least.

RAWs on the P20 Pro were really good, but image processing let down jpegs. The Mate 20 Pro is also a very good camera phone, even till now, and it uses the standard RGB IMX600.

I looked up my comment about this a year and a half ago:
"Huawei NR smears the most out of all the flagships (HTC's seems to smear the least, surprisingly) and the only thing in auto propping up that low light performance is that second 20MP monochrome, because the 1/1.7" 40MP main on its own is horrible, its low light performance alone is completely out of proportion with its sensor size (easily hands the win to S9 and Pixel2), even if you manually bin the 40MP's output down to 10MP its low light performance is good as useless, Phonearena already did such a comparison size-matching the output of the P20Pro 40MP and a regular Pixel2XL low light shot."
Nobody was able to eventually elucidate whether or not the smear was the monochrome's fault, but I don't think it caught up to Samsung back then.
And there's the other issue that Samsung sabotaged their own processing lately, S9 was actually slightly better.
