New data from The Car Expert shows UK electric owners could save up to 30 percent on maintenance costs compared to diesel and petrol vehicles. The study surveyed more than 600 cars in 2025.

If you exclude gas costs then your calculations make no sense. Not to mentioned older car means stuff more likely to break down and higher maintenance costs. Hence why average ownership time of new cars is longer than used.

If I include gas/electricity costs it works out in ICE favor, assuming fuel/charge at public stations.

Average cost of gas is currently $3.20/gallon.
Average charging rate in the U.S. is ~$.36/kWh
Let's average 12K miles a year.

Electricity costs would be $7600 over 5 years.
Gas cost would be $7111.

You could reduce this by buying a charger at home and pay much lower rates, but that isn't always possible for many people, and has additional costs and electrical code updates.

Also it takes *much* longer to charge EVs than gas vehicles, so if we attribute $/time the factor heavily weighs in gas favor.
