TCL has confirmed that its upcoming display panels have attained an Eyesafe display certification for blue-light reduction and color performance. This standard has been developed to protect user eye health. They are applied to various screen types, those for PCs or monitors included, and may become a preferred spec in the new devices of the near future.

Is "blue light" actually causing problems for people, or is it just another fad like kale, quinoa, acai berries, and gluten-free food (for the non-allergic)?

It's a marketing scam.  No evidence exist in regards to 'blue light' issues.  While this is about a display its a play on glasses that reduce blue light.
