RISC-V chip designer SiFive it has been revealed to have some pretty interesting investors. A recent filing shows that it has raised US$65.4 million in its latest funding round including a cash injection from Qualcomm that sees it join fellow heavyweights in Samsung and Intel as investors.

RISC-V is very similar in design to ARM's Aarch64 that all new high end smartphone designs have been using since the iPhone 5s and Galaxy S6 generation.

As such there is no reason that RISC-V can't match any performance level that ARM can -- it's just a matter of sufficient time and money being invested in advanced microarchitecures.

Right now, the high end of RISC-V is at the ARM A53/A55 level that is used as the "used most of the time" LITTLE processor in high end phones and tablets, or as the main CPU in low end phones and tablets.
