Workhorse. The 730U3E ultrabook is a new member of Samsung's Series 7 Ultra family. A first-rate metal casing, swift hardware, a matte Full HD IPS screen and agreeable input devices are its initial key specs. We tested the model featuring a 256 GB memory for EUR 1349 (RRP).

For those that game this would actually be a worse laptop than the new 5 Series Ultrabook.

The 1080p IPS display is nice, but that means you'll need to push more pixel with the HD8550m instead of the 5 series more powerful HD8750m at 768p. Where modern games are playable on the 5 series at 768p, they would most probably choke on the 7 series at 1080p with HD8550m.

Other than the gaming aspect, this is a wonderful laptop similar to the 5 series built but lighter and with a gorgeous IPS display.

You don't need to game at 1080p. There's nothing stopping you from running at 768p when gaming or even 720p. For all other purposes, this Series 7 ultrabook is superior.

someguy

That's not entirely true.

Setting your game to 768p on a 1080p display doesn't equate to the same performance as a game rendering at the native resolution. This is a common misconception. Because now what the GPU needs to do once a frame is rendered is to scale that 768p frame all the way up to 1080p using the shader engine. Hence instead of getting your performance up, you are actually slowing it down because each frame has a additional shader pass to upscale the scene to 1080p.

You always wants to play your game at your native resolution. Hence if gaming is your thing, the more powerful 5 series with HD8750m at 768p should be your go to solution.

I'm not dissing the 7 series. If you don't game, this is a perfect platform for daily compute + encoding?

Scaling

someguy: Why would the GPU have to upscale lower resolution to 1080? Isn't a laptop display capable of scaling to lower resolutions like all the normal PC displays?

Scaling

I've now read from the German version of this site that the GPU runs at higher clocks when on AC power. And the gaming performance is better with latest drivers and BIOS and you get better performance especially with lower resolutions.

Niko

Wait. Why is the mouse score lower on this model (84% vs. 88%) when everything except for the screen and CPU is supposed to be identical? Does using the laptop screen as a touchpad count toward the score too?

1) Guys when you say "The ultrabook comes with a warranty period of 24 months" you better notice that it works only in Germany, don't you think?
2) So it's Realtec wifi adapter or Intel's?
