Mainstream ultrabook. Asus now wants to conquer the wide ultrabook consumer market with its new S56CM beside its premium Zenbook range. A strong graphics unit, an elegant aluminum finish and a low price might lure the one or other potential buyer. Read in the following review whether the S56CM lives up to its promise.

good laptop, cpu is not a bottleneck for graphics, s56 has slow version of the 635m with 96 cores (like 630m), asus n55 has 144 cores version

Touko

The autonomy looks really poor, have you asked Asus another version of this computer to test it ? I Was planning to buy this computer but because of this review I am really going to think about it a little longer...

kall

lol so it's not even a real 144 cores 635M GT. Not surprising, only 60W at full load for a 555M GT was unrealistic

Yop

About the graphic card, it is actually a very slow model of GT635m. In fact, the specs are closer to the GT630m. Comparing with other 635m leads to false interpretations.

I bought this laptop and the battery has nothing to do with the test. I think it must be around 6 hours with a battery saving mode.

I bought this laptop and battery lasts longer than test in review.
As an amateur photographer, editing pictures on this laptop, I have to say the black value and contrast is very good, though the highlights are saturated ridiculously fast. Maybe a gamma correction program can fix it but I'm still searching.
It is also important to mention this ultrabook may be thin but it's a lot heavier than I thought it would be.
Also the touchpad sometimes does not respond to a simple tap (left click), the gestures work well enough.
Performance is good.

I bought this lapptop and it was not really working, when I investgated HDD partitions, I have encountered that, there were several partitions and operation systems intalled to the HDD and that was the source of the problem. The HDD lamp was on always. I do not offer this laptop. The SSD on this laptop is not enough to install operation system and you will never able to install another operation system due to 24 GB SSD.

Hi All,

Is someone else experiencing annoying, loud fan noise using Asus S56C ultrabook? I have just bought this core i3 model, win8. But the fan doesn't stop the annoying high-pitched ventillation noise. Nothing is running, after turning on the laptop the fan starts until I turn off the computer. I can only watch movie but not able to hear it, the fan noise beats any audio I am listening to. I like to fall asleep watching movies setting the volume almost at minimum, but not with this model. The design is cool, so is its temperature, not more than 40 C. I don't understand why is the fan operating then. Well, sometimes it stops when I restart it, but not all the time.
Is there a way to quiten it down? Do I have a faulty model?
I tried to use SpeedFan but it didn't work.

I bought the newer variant in Malaysia, S56CB-XX390H. It has i7 and GT740M. Win 8 experience index in order: 7.1, 7.8, 6.1, 6.6, 5.9. Generally satisfied.

can you please post any benchmark results? I am planning to buy the same model and I'm not sure if it's going to be good enough for video editing and programming.
thanks!

i have the i3 model. i use it to power my 24inch monitor via HDMI and play dota2 on med settings. i still avg 40-50fps whilst playing a tvshows on the monitor.
i always have this laptop in my backpack for uni and lanning. pretty good build quality and easy to clean when u splash fizzy drinks on it.

the only thing i can complain is when u first load different programs at once it hangs abit then continues working. i think the i3 is to blame.

but i bought it for AUD$483, so i cant complain one bit :)

I am using this laptop for about 4-5 months. Its great laptop. super smooth. the only thing which it lacks is dedicated video card as it has shared graphic card from intel but still i can run need for speed and fifa 2013 on this laptop easily.  Asus is famous for making motherboards and most important part in any laptop is its motherboard and thats why this laptop has wonderful laptop. That is why laptop does not heatup ever, and does not make any noise. I have used HP, Dell brands as well but I like Asus among the best of all.
