Qualcomm has unveiled the 2 nm Snapdragon 8 Elite Extreme Gen 6 and Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 6, promising 5 GHz Oryon Prime Core CPU speeds alongside major gains in graphics, AI, imaging, efficiency, and connectivity. The Extreme model adds enhanced on-device AI, dedicated Adreno High Performance Memory, Neural Fusion, and advanced 8K 60 video capture. Devices using both chips expected to arrive in the coming weeks.

this is very insightful, thank you. i haven't thought about the modern computing problem in that light before. I've been wondering for a while why computers and devices still feel mediocre and tame even thought they are 10x faster than 10-15 years ago. it's a shame corporations are artificially constraining dram and memory progress and innovations in the consumer market all for a sliver of more profitability.

high-bandwidth memory like GDDR and HBM have been around for ages now yet massive corporate memory makers refuse to fit them for general RAM usage in computing, even though they have the money and resources to make it happen pretty quickly. they know once memory speeds catch up to computing power and people can get VERY high-end computing from even modern budget CPUs and devices, the PC, laptop, and mobile markets will crater due to people not needing to upgrade for 10+ years.

So its peak clock can pass this supposed "5 GHz barrier." Cool... but peak clock speed isn't the same thing as sustained performance.

We've already seen an earlier Extreme Gen 6 engineering sample hit 5 GHz on paper while its telemetry showed the cores spending much of the workload around 4.6 GHz.

Look at the A20 Pro. Its peak clock is slightly lower at 4.93 GHz, but what matters is how much of that performance it can actually sustain under load.

I'll wait for sustained testing on retail phones before getting excited about a 5 GHz headline. Peak clocks look great on a spec sheet. Sustained performance is what actually matters. Same applies for the GPU they are hyping up.
