750 was an OK price. 1050, not so much. Just buy a higher specced mini pc and a steam controller at this point, and install SteamOS on it. (Or any Linux distro really)

For this price I'd rather buy a good gaming laptop or PC connect it to tv and much cheaper option is Xbox series x or even PS5 pro for 700 rather than buy steam machine for 1100. Please. Let me live

- Fairly obvious to everyone but many of the sheeple here that the 'Steam Machine' is NOT for those that can DIY or are looking for something 'high performance'.

Steam is a NON-Subscription service/store front that is disconnected from Sony, Microsoft & Nintendo. Steam has a VERY DEEP LIBRARY of games that might/could be played and enjoyed on the Steam Machine and as an ADDED BONUS whatever you purchase on Steam follows you to PC's if you so choose to have one that is able to play games.

Frankly if some of the hardware were not as expensive as it is right now they MIGHT OF hit the "magical" $400-600USD price point and FLEW off the shelves into eager hands however at the current price point the possible selling points are:
- Not Microsoft, Sony or Nintendo
- Large Catalog

Even without the "shortages" it'd still cost more than something that perform better, perhaps even with exact same configuration.

And Valve is one of the (if not exactly the) most glazed gaming companies out there. Lots of people treat them like god as if they never did anything wrong.

According to Dave2D this will be an extremely low volume product. Aka vaporware. So it's not just the price, it's practically nonexistent too. This is flat out lying to the public, it would've been better they said that they weren't launching anything this year. They also kinda lied about it being 4k@60fps machine, even with fsr most tests are showing its too weak for it.

It's less about the price and more about the poor messaging / going silents for several months / flat out lying.

Yea, but you don't also need subsidisation to lower hardware costs. Just having access to the economies of scale valve has, should get them significantly lower component costs than the average individual could gather. But, we're finding cheaper, more powerful machines in the EU mind you, with 20% tax included. Not US microcenter deals mind you. That's insane...

Even the they couldn't get supply components doesn't hold up. They been working on this machine since 2023! They announced this last year before the costs and supply go this dire. Who makes a public announcement without even having locking in the hardware contracts? This is a colossal fail of planning. They had plenty of time to stock up. Probably just waited till last minute to further squeeze margins and it backfired now. Just pure greed. Steam doesn't even good sales anymore.

No defense of Valve here. The box was never going to do 4K (much like MOST systems being sold today).

As far as "costs" and "profits" I see the long standing myth continues. LOL!!
(a quick hint is Amazons marketplace where no-name mini-pc's can be had for a 'song')

While there WAS HOPE that Valve's Steam Machine might help bring additional support for Linux Gaming in general it would appear that it will be a novelty purchase if anything.

BTW: for those that are interested THIS very website has a fairly GOOD "GPU Chart" that can show how well (or not!) different GPU's stack up against each other.

For reference the chart I'm looking at places:
351 - Steam Deck
297 - AMD Radeon 780M
263 - Nvidia GTX1650 Ti Max Q
174 - Nvidia GTX1070 Mobile
153 - Nvidia RTX4050 Mobile
86 -  Nvidia RTX5050 Mobile

While I have a few of the above (56,174,263,297) rather comically I use #263 the most often. LOL!

Whatever was planned, doesn't matter. In the end, only the current price, that people are ready to buy a product for, matters.

The Steam Machine is like a desktop PC, but you can not upgrade and are stuck with a, low-mid perf, 8 GB VRAM GPU.
