The Lenovo ThinkPad P16 has always been a high-end mobile workstation with lofty price points, but a current offer for a maxed-out configuration of the 16-inch Lenovo machine exemplifies the ludicrous pricing in the laptop and PC segment these days.

I'd like to see who's buying these RAM hogs and deliver them a swift kick to the head, courtesy of anyone interested in doing anything on a PC besides AI.

Companies are buying these for their special snowflake employees where the people making the financial decisions don't know jack about what they actually need. Source: I have known many of the people that ask for machines like this, mostly data scientists.

If Lenovo is discounting them 38% then it seems not enough people are buying them. I am sure the production run on these ended ages ago and they are sitting in a warehouse now.

$14k MSRP is pretty ridiculous when the core cost is probably only $800 in materials.

The mostly ignorant comments on here remind me of the old "640K ought to be enough for anybody" quote.
The specs on this laptop would appeal to anyone doing serious video editing. Sure, most of the current applications are using AI in some form, but just editing in 4K requires serious resources. Rendering on a machine like this could be reduced from several hours to real time or faster.
This doesn't only apply to video editing, but also to other creative and production oriented application.
Also, the dedicated NPU on the machine is only 13 TOPS - so not exactly an AI beast.
While this CPU may be from last year, it outperforms the current top of the line Core Ultra X9 processor 378H in terms of raw performance. The latter CPU only bests it in terms of power efficiency and AI application with its 50 TOPS NPU.
So, just because you can't comprehend the application and value of a laptop like this, that doesn't mean it doesn't have a suitable application or isn't good value at $8999. It just means that you are clearly not the target market.

@CD: Don't those serious video editing apps prefer / require high memory bandwidth? That's one of the things I don't understand with this. Who wants this much ram on a 128 bit bus? One of the reasons why macs are good for video editing (among many other factors as well) is they have higher bandwidth on pro and max chips. This feels like a complete waste to me.

@Spuwho: Lenovo always do this. Give an overly inflated initial price then few months later give a "discount" which in reality isn't much a discount as that's what the original standard price was supposed to begin with. I hate this practice in the industry and think it should be stopped.

Really? I thought most them just got MBPs. I barely see ThinkPads used anymore besides few niche users like open source Linux advocates, Hackathons/CTFs, etc.
