The ThinkPad P14s Gen 7 AMD has arrived to replace its AMD Strix Point-based predecessor. Launching with up to the Ryzen AI 9 HX Pro 470, the new 14-inch ThinkPad can also be configured with a 2.8K OLED display and 96 GB of user-replaceable RAM within a housing that weighs just 1.29 kg.

That would be nice, but I'd be surprised if that were the case (all puns intended) due to thermal constraints, BOM cost, and desired battery life.

What's significant is Lenovo have completely dumped MediaTek WLAN cards from the BOM, featuring Intel NICs instead. The latter are better, but are also known to be problematic when paired with AMD CPUs due to being designed for use in Intel machines.

It's advertised as WiFi 7 too. That's strange. Past amd CPU with intel nic machines were locked to WiFi 6E only. This might be a first..

Man, you weren't kidding about about Lenovo dumping mediatek. I just checked the Lenovo Yoga 7a 2-in-1 2026. Which is a budget laptop for around $1000. Even tho none of Lenovo's official documentation points to what exact NIC it uses, when you go to driver webpage, download wireless drivers it's intel. :)

This isn't even a ThinkPad. This bodes well for upcoming Lenovo halo laptops. That they will use intel also. Wonder if this has anything to do with China-Taiwan relations.

The Intel product page confirms Wi-Fi 7 https://www.intel.com/content/www/us/en/products/sku/240287/intel-wifi-7-r2-be211/specifications.html. Would be awful if Intel named a WLAN NIC "BE" without any actual 802.11be support.

That said, I have a TP-Link Omada EAP787 running in Wi-Fi 7 only mode and Wi-Fi 5 & 6 clients connect to it just fine, including the 6 GHz band for 6E clients.

This has everything to do with MediaTek WLAN NICs being literal garbage. I know, because I have a ThinkPad P14s Gen 6 AMD equipped with a MediaTek MT7925. From early February to last week (fixed presumably by an update) it started being unable to connect to Wi-Fi after around 24h uptime, with the only solution being to disable and re-enable the device in Windows. Unlike Intel, MediaTek doesn't offer standalone driver downloads, which puts the onus on the OEM and/or Windows Update to push updates and means bugs take much longer to fix.

It certainly does bode well for future Lenovo laptops. Now we just need to get HP to switch their AMD ZBooks to Intel NICs too. No idea who Dell uses.

Ryzen AI 400 "Gorgon Point" series is unfortunately just a rename of the 300 series (some call it 'refresh', but 'rename' is more honest).

For reference, this APU will only marginally outperform the Ryzen AI 9 HX Pro 370

Indeed, it's only 'marginally', because it's a rename after all (AMD overclocked the rename and called it a day).

I assume it's still the T14 non-s chassis? Because the weight is lower this time, than expected (1.3 vs 1.5kg). Not sure why they call it P14s, seems dishonest (yes, it's a workstation, but was there ever a P14 non-s?), but it's lighter this time?, so at least there's that.

Also, the P14s G7 AMD misses out on a discrete GPU option like the P14s i G7.

I do not want a dGPU in this small and light form-factor.

Hopefully no more 45% NTSC (60-70% sRGB) and 300 nits options.

The ThinkPad P14s G7 AMD will also be sold with up to 96 GB of DDR5-5600 RAM split across dual SO-DIMM slots and 2 TB of PCIe Gen 5 storage.

Even tho the APU does supports LPDDR5x-8533, it is LENOVO this time who reused the mainboard and not adding LPCAMM2 support, and called it a day.

Since it's a rename, I wonder if the LPDDR5X-8000 on the Ryzen 300 series is limited artificially in firmware, because the renamed Ryzen 400 series supports LPDDR5x-8533.

But I'd like to see at least up to 128 GB RAM, preferably up to 192 GB RAM support or the full 256 GB RAM support, tho. The Ryzen APU itself supports up to 256 GB RAM (even the older 7840U), so the up to 96 GB RAM is an artificial limitation by LENOVO:

I think I realize where my confusion is coming from now. Apparently intel sell 2 different versions of their BE WiFi products. There's CNVio and generic PCIe..

The former is a proprietary tech that seems to push some stuff to the chipset/cpu and apparently is currently being pushed by intel. It's the one where if you've that it will only allow WiFi 6E on any non intel CPU laptop.

The later includes everything on the chip so it enables full WiFi 7 regardless of your cpu setup. I'm guessing most OEMs weren't using this before (due to cost?) but it seems now Lenovo are.
