At MWC 2026, Lenovo is announcing their newest additions to the legendary ThinkPad T series. The mainstream models Lenovo ThinkPad T14 Gen 7 and ThinkPad T16 Gen 5 get a lot of love this year, as Lenovo totally redesigned them. Both will launch with AMD and Intel options.

QuoteAll versions have upgradeable RAM, but significantly, the Intel ThinkPads use LPCAMM2 LPDDR5X memory for the first time - the AMD models on the other hand utilize more mundane SO-DIMM RAM. Both top out at 64 GB.
In times of AI / LLM self-hosting and data privacy, it's time for Lenovo to increase the maximum RAM support to up to 96 GB RAM (and up to 128 GB RAM for the P14s and P16s series).

Is the LPCAMM2 memory at least running at 9600 MT/s?

Highly likely it isn't. The Thinkbooks have 8533 MT/S LPCAMM2 sticks, so I guess it's the same for the ThinkPad. I don't even know if there are 9600MT/s sticks available on the market.

Frustratingly, Lenovo has done the opposite. The T14 Gen 5&6 and T16 Gen 3&4 all supported 128GB. They have cut the max memory in half for both the T14 Gen 7 and T16 Gen 5.

I applaud their efforts to improve repairability, but that's only one aspect of a laptop's appeal. When I can see that the same model from 2 generations prior supports *double* the memory of their current offering I lose interest.

Boo LENOVO

True. And just to make it clear: LENOVO artificially decreased the maximum RAM capacity, as the CPUs/APUs themselves support up to 256 GB RAM:

Clevo and XMG Evo 14/15 E25 support up to 128 GB RAM and are 1/2 to 1/3 (if one just needs the memory bandwidth, as top tier CPU/APU is not needed to reach the maximum memory bandwidth (only 2-4 threads)) the price.

TUXEDO also has one or more up to 128 GB RAM laptop(s). They even have a search menu where one can filter the RAM amount and select "up to 128 GB".
