A leaker with a yet-to-be tested track record has revealed plenty of downgrades which the upcoming 12.9-inch MacBook might have to endure. Rumored to be priced anywhere between $599 and $649, the budget MacBook is sizing up to be quite a contentious product.

So in other words, trash-tier specs from about 15 years ago for entry level $300-400 laptops.

I wouldn't call it "trash" tier - the single-core performance is right there with the best. Multi-core is decent, should be enough for the majority of casual users.

But yeah, if true, the lack of a backlit keyboard will be hilarious.

There have been naysayers before... (think iPhone XR)
I know many walled-garden enthusiasts who will gladly get one for their aging parent, or their middle schooler. That said, if the rumors are true, the cost-cutting definitely looks quite severe.
