Nachdem im ersten Teil die Entscheidung gegen den Provider-Router gefallen ist, geht es nun ans Eingemachte: Welche Hardware eignet sich für einen eigenen OpenWRT-Router? Mini-PC, Raspberry Pi oder klassischer Router? Dazu kommen Switch und Access Point. In diesem Teil zeige ich meine Auswahl – inklusive Überlegungen zu Stromverbrauch, Architektur und Preis.

Also wenn du gleich nen openwrt router nutzt hast du alles in einem:
Router, Switch und AP.

Denke der Stromverbrauch deiner 3 Geräte ist vermutlich jetzt sogar höher als wenn du nen OpenWRT Router nutzt.!

Ich fand und finde diese Artikelreihe gut! Gerne mehr davon!

Was mir gerade beim Lesen solcher DIY Projekten oft wünsche ist, daß ich hierfür ein ausgedientes Smartphone (das SoC) benutzen könnte. Wie viele Leute habe ich 1-2 Smartphones in der Schublade liegen, die zwar a.D. sind, aber ansonsten eigentlich genug Compute Leistung und RAM dafür hätten. Da wäre es eben gut, wenn sowohl die Smartphone als auch die SoC Hersteller die Hardware freigeben würden (müssten), damit man die Elektronik, für die man ja gutes Geld bezahlt hat, umwidmen kann wenn man's will.

It seems that I have the same idea as your part one. For your part 2 my HW idea/plan is below.

I have an (aging) setup with an old ASUS router/wifi bridged to the cable modem and two more AP (cheap router in AP mode). The ASUS (being abandoned by the company) is now running FreshTomato...
BUT the two AP are not compatible with anything open source...

My replcaement plan to future proof:

nanopi R56S as openwrt router (2x 2.5G eth0 + eth1) - this is more than my current ISP and my GB switch... (€100)
I am likely to add an 8 port 2.5G POE switch to power the AP (then with UPS!)... (≤ €100)

3x d-link M32 (AX3200 AP with compatible openWRT image) - open box set (€130)

while I am waiting for the Hardware to arrive, I am researching the proper configuration... THAT is how I found your page -;)

So, I am currently running a few virtualbox openWRT images to learn configuration...
and I am looking forward to your part 3 for further discussion and learning!

PS: yes, possibly a higher power budget. BUT, full control over the network. (with wireguard no info for the ISP to spy on or throttle my streaming!)
