Qualcomm confirms "Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5" moniker for forthcoming flagship SoC

Qualcomm has now confirmed its plans to launch its next-gen flagship SoC at the upcoming Snapdragon Summit later this month. The chipset will be branded as the "Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5" and will directly succeed last year's Snapdragon 8 Elite.

There exist already Snapdragons 8 Gen. 4, 8S Gen. 4, 7 Gen. 4 and 6 Gen. 4. The natural progression of the 8 Elite should have been to the 8 Elite Gen. 2 ... but who knows, maybe now there is an issue also with the 2 and 3 number, aside from the 4.

In many Chinese buildings, the number '4', pronounced 'sì', is omitted from floor numbers, elevator buttons, and other features because it sounds similar to the word for 'death', pronounced 'sǐ'. Also it is avoided in vehicle registration plates, etc.

In fact there is a town in China where they adore number 4, opposite to common belief ... a Chinese lady told me about it .

The only reason I can possibly see a company doing this is maybe there are some bigger under the hood changes that warrant skipping a few numbers.

Let's hope there's some massive improvements here going from 8 elite 1 to 5 as otherwise it's just pure marketing.

I'm pretty sure Qualcomm has used '4' somewhere in their history and other companies have too. So I really don't think it's that.

Qualcomm may be simply harmonizing the Gen numbers of all their Snapdragons. So all new gens in 2025 will be Gen 5, then all new gens in 2026 will be Gen 6, and so forth. They probably don't want their Elite products to show older, earlier gen numbers than the less powerful models, right?

There exist already SnapD.s 8Gen4, 8sGen4, 7Gen4, 7sGen4 and 6Gen4 ... enough fours already stocked ... so that is not an issue.
