Volkswagen Golf eHybrid and GTE debut with more power, less than stellar range

The Volkswagen Golf series has been augmented with two new variants, both of which are plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs). Both new cars are equipped with second-gen powertrains rated for the equivalent of up to 272 horsepower (in the GTE) and fast DC charging, although their range might leave a little to be desired. The GTE and eHybrid also come with Discover Media navigation and Digital Cockpit Pro infotainment features as standard, although features such as Lane Assist are optional extras.

The new Golf eHybrid and GTE have exceptional all-electric range. For comparison, this Kelly Blue Book table of 2024 PHEV all-electric ranges shows none above 45 miles.

That headline still states "less than stellar range" and the text improperly compares it to a hybrid bicycle instead of to all the other PHEV vehicles. That really should be edited promptly, right?

Agreed. These ranges are roughly double what most other PHEVs offer. Not only that, the charge speed is also miles (per hour) ahead of the competition, even not counting the DCFC support!

For comparison, the 2024 Toyota Prius Prime lists 44 miles AER and is burdened by a woefully-anachronistic charging limit of 3.5kW. The Golf vehicles here will not force drivers who wish to use public charging to occupy the stations for the disproportionate amounts of time that the Toyota Prius Prime does.

Of course, critical questions remain regarding the percentage of the battery pack's total capacity these two new vehicles allow the driver to use, as well as the cell chemistry. These factors will influence how often they should actually be charged to the 100% displayed SoC that would enable these quoted ranges.

Yeah I was going to say the same. The author is on drugs if he thinks a PHEV will get huge range like an EV. These ranges are more than enough and I can guarantee any one I will not be buying an EV before solid state batteries are a thing, prices and weight are slashed. For me PHEV all the way for next 5 years.

I don't think the author knows what a PHEV is.

That is definitely more than most by a decent margin, though I will note not to compare US range to EU range estimates as US test is slightly stricter and will likely be 60-65 miles on the ehybrid, which is still pretty much more than most by a decent margin

ICE-only vehicles are not and should not be the future, if not for the emissions benefits then for the convenience of rarely visiting a petrol stop.

PHEVs like these Golf vehicles are a good stop-gap while we wait for better infrastructure and battery tech for the masses. At least for those who can already reliably charge at home or work.

wow that sounds great! its got enough battery range for everyday commuting, plenty of power, and huge hybrid range. I bet its drives good too

You've drunk too much kool aid, there is no suck thing as simple and reliable ICE vehicle, never was, and never will be as its an oxymoron
