The Chinese government has responded to the chip trade war started by President Biden in 2021 by banning AMD and Intel CPUs from the list of authorized computer chips used in government computers. This move continues to widen the trade chasm between China and America as they strive for dominance in AI, cloud computing, cybersecurity, personal electronics, EV vehicles, and supercomputers.

Officials will struggle with proprietary Chinese hardware at work, but at home they will still use Western hardware because it is faster and better. And their children will also only use it.

For the population to turn away from Western hardware and software, China must become a technological leader on its own, but it is just trying to catch up with the leaders, not overtake. This requires human capital, and even the Chinese Academy of Sciences has officially admitted that here in China there is a complete failure with this advanced layer of people. And there is nothing surprising here - orchids do not grow in a totalitarian world. They require a special greenhouse climate, and not strict instructions on how to think and act. The Chinese totalitarian system is slowly devouring itself in global competition. Just like the Russian one.

I want to ban Intel/AMD/Microsoft myself.  Am already using Deepin Linux in place of Windows 11 for online activities and that is a Chinese OS based on Linux.  In 5 years time Huawei's Harmony OS for PCs will kill Microsoft, then I will smile at glee at the more non-US company options available for PC's!!

DontMisinform

This is such dishonest framing of this geopolitical issue.

The "trade war" was not started by President Biden, but by Trump, and has had the sustained backing of the US government. This includes the "chip" aspect. Please refer to the timeline published by Reuters ("US targets China over semiconductors").

Was there any actual reason to include "Biden" in the title? I don't think so.

Such irresponsible journalism in times when factual reporting matters the most.

Totalitarian trope

Which is why huawei was able to mass produce 7nm chips even after the chips ban right?

NikoB

It does not produce them en masse, because it loses economically in terms of cost (without government injections, which I have written about many times, at the expense of taxpayers' money).

They do not have the most advanced equipment, unless Western business, bypassing restrictions, supplies them with the most advanced lithographic equipment.

It's all about global competitiveness.

As we see, everything is also rotten in the USA and the market economy has also long since disappeared. Therefore, this is a competition of state machines - where there are more resources over a long distance.

And of course the key factor is human capital. Everything is bad with it in China. But the USA (the West as a whole) has practically destroyed (and is finishing off) its own. Only a comfortable environment for raising children in the "middle class" without any government censorship or ideology leads to the flourishing of the next layer of people with the maximum outlook and creative inclinations of thinking. The United States is now destroying this layer of people almost as violently as in China.

So time will tell who will win this battle of human and material resources.

"7nm" in China is still far behind advanced developments in the West.
And these are NOT Chinese nanometers, but Western ones, because western equipment is used everywhere there, which will soon be worn out, and there will be nothing to replace it with, and a lot of equipment to produce mass goods! stupid ordinary people don't understand this, that's why they are stupid and easily succumb to Chinese state propaganda, just like the ordinary poorly educated and zombified population in totalitarian Russia naively believes in "import substitution," which is not even close.

It is important to always be many steps ahead of your competitor in order to be the undisputed technological (and then ideological) leader in the world.

China cannot at the moment try on this "crown" of a leader, just as it does not want  it totalitarian powers, because China is NOT a leader. It is just trying to catch up with the real leader - the West.
