Looking through images that compare PlayStation devkits with the final products reveals a couple of things: Both the PlayStation 5 devkit and final design PS5 console are revolutionary in comparison to their predecessors, and a lot can be expected from the PS6 devkit now Sony has raised this particular bar.

The PS4 had a revolutionary design because it was slim and elegant. The PS5 is goes backwards by its bulky and ridiculus look.

I was really hoping the impending launch of these consoles could save us from the torrent of unfounded speculation regarding next-gen consoles, but apparently now we're on to speculating about a product that is likely 7+ years out instead. Great.

Yes, there is definitely an indication that the PS5 and its devkit are more thoroughly designed pieces of technology than previous ones - but that is true of pretty much all product design these days. Just compare a modern high end SFF PC case to one from ten years ago - it's a night and day difference. Same goes for phones, or cars, or anything else even remotely premium that's manufactured. The fields of product design and engineering have integrated much more than ever before, and we're getting better products from it (no more "just stuff all the electronics in a box" approaches). But using this to speculate about a product that'll launch closer to 2030 than today ... no thanks.

Oh, and doesn't the far more advanced hardware design of the Xbox Series X say just the same thing, though arguably even more? It is definitely a more clear example of concurrent and interconnected engineering and design work than the PS5, which after all retains pretty much the same structure of the PS4, just bigger.

The Ps4 was a basic box given a slant. Zaha Hadid's architectural work is in the same veining as the PS5 and it doesn't mean her work is ridiculous looking just because it's use of organically flowing geometry. You might as well freeze time because if the future of the architecture will all be like Zaha, you might not living in that time period.
