Sony sold only 600,000 smartphones in the previous quarter, an all-time low for the Japanese company's smartphone division. The collapse of its smartphone business also has consequences for the services that Sony offers.

They don't want to sell compact smartphones to their loyal customers anymore, remove the jack ; instead they now release plasticky phones with their 21:9 cinematic screens that nobody asked for. Go figure !

Can not agree, their phones are best of best.
But the prize is not right. I have XZ2 Compact and its best phone i ever had.
But I got it while I worked in store for like 30% cheaper and there ware still phones I could get for the same prize with the same spec without even prize cut from boss.

Actually every new phone is going to have 21;9 so you are also wrong here.
The ratio allow to make phones a little better for one hand usage, easier to hold .

For whatever app that retains upper left/right corner controls, and there are many, a taller, narrower screen is a mistake.

I sell impact adhesive for those dozy sods who can't stop looking at their phones.every 2 secs to see if mummy is calling her little "snowflake". Bit of bugger initially for buyers to stick it on their nose though and even worse if the poor little dears have a cold. My old phone does what I want it too - make/receive calls, now isn't that a novelty?

They should basically copy xiaomi and add few original hw/sw. Their phones just lack most popular and new features while having the price of apple/samsung flagships.

Sony smartphones suffer from being a bit over-priced. Also, they have no US carrier support. Why? Average consumers probably didn't even know Sony still offered competitive smartphones.

Yes you can buy their latest from Amazon or BestBuy, but no carrier option to split payments for the device, its a really hard sell. And now that Motorola Razr has a 21:9 foldable screen, it's like Sony has effectively stopped trying.

LOL

Sony phones are overpriced and their quality is average at best. Pay no attention to the diehard Sony fanboy apologists (many have already moved on to another brand since XZ2). Their favorite excuse is that a 'lack of marketing' is what caused the decline in sales. Nope, Sony deliberately scaled back marketing to reduce the losses.

It's only the legendary Japanese corporate stubbornness which still keeps Xperia alive at this point. Eventually Sony will also give up. Sony is doing okay in its other businesses, so other than a few Xperia fanboys, no one is going to notice or care.

Copying Xiaomi is impossible, because Sony demands a Sony brand tax, while Xiaomi has mostly eliminated the middleman to keep prices low.

Anyway, Sony's other businesses e.g. gaming, movies and cameras are doing well. There's no need or urgency for Sony to drastically change what's left of its mobile business.
