I am a small channel and make a few hundred bucks a month so this is very bad for me.
Here are the top candidates for the next digital rug pull i think will happen at some point, probably durning the next recession:
1. The Revenue Split Shave
Long form ad share sits at fifty five percent for creators today. Watch for them to trim that split down to fifty or forty five percent, framing it as an infrastructure contribution for cloud server bandwidth or computing fees.
2. Pay To Play Reach
They already built internal promotion buttons into creator dashboards. The classic algorithmic squeeze means organic reach to your own subscriber base gets choked down, unless you pay a boost fee to push uploads into subscriber feeds.
3. Automated Content Sweeps
Expect harsher automated demonetization bots flagging back catalogs for recycled, low value, or AI adjacent material. Millions of old videos will lose monetization status in bulk sweeps with zero human appeal options.
4. Hosting And Storage Fees
If balance sheets tighten further during a broader economic downturn, expect hosting tiers where channels below a minimum view count pay monthly fees to keep their video library stored on high speed servers.
