NieR creator Yoko Taro says many projects were axed behind the scenes: ‘I haven’t been doing nothing’

At G-CON 2025 NieR creator Yoko Taro said that, contrary to perceptions that he has been idle since NieR: Automata, he has been working on multiple projects that were repeatedly discontinued mid-development by publishers such as Square Enix and thus never released. He framed the cancellations as a mixed blessing that enforces a focus on quality over quantity and warned that fans should not expect another major Yoko Taro or NieR entry anytime soon.
