Potentially annoying: ROG Xbox Ally full screen experience requires restart for optimizations after switching from Windows desktop

The Asus ROG Xbox Ally and the ROG Xbox Ally X are landing in October with a brand-new Windows handheld gaming experience. The new UI has considerable under-the-hood improvements. Windows Central took the ROG Xbox Ally for a spin, showing, among other things, seamless switching between the traditional Windows desktop and the new full-screen mode.

I think this is reasonable. To get the best performance you would probably have to start a clean slate otherwise you'd likely need to maintain some crazy white/blacklist, and handle closing all those desktop processes gracefully, which is more or less a restart. Given the boot will probably be faster in this new mode I think it's a reasonable compromise for the flexibility it brings, and the fact that you can jump back into game mode with/without a restart is great as well.

When this eventually hits desktop computers, I'd personally be using game mode just for the UI benefits, because I'd want my desktop processes to continue and performance wouldn't be a concern

Microsoft should stop and close the desktop services, It's reasonable Microsoft to maintain the white/blacklist of what to start and what to stop with explorer.exe

It's not hard to start/stop applications and services in Windows.

Unless the kernel itself beneath changes in irreversible way when one goes into full desktop experience mode.
