Solar energy is becoming increasingly present in our daily lives, and startup Reflect Orbital understands this well. The company plans to deploy mirrors in space to redirect sunlight to Earth without interruption.

Just not on the scale that's occurring now. It's normally a slow change over hundreds of thousands of years, not centuries or decades. But that doesn't fit the right wing narrative of deny deny deny.

Doesn't light exponentially reduce in output over distance? like unless they are focusing the light to an insanely small point I don't think this would net much energy comparable to the amount of money it'll take to set it up and maintain

I wonder if it makes more sense to put the solar panels in space and use a different transfer method, that way we aren't blocking a huge amount of light that would've hit earth and wouldn't need to make a giant satellite

I have high school level science knowledge that I have mostly forgotten in case I've said something really dumb

You are right about the power reduction over distance. Its called the inverse square law. Google it. As for doing something other than reflecting light down to the earths surface there probably are better methods of getting solar power down to the surface from orbiting satellites. They usually involve changing the wavelength used. Microwaves or infra-red have been proposed to reduce absorbtion by the earths atmosphere.

Even more sunlight being sent into an overheating Earth

Are we mad?
