Xiaomi confirms MIUI's demise for the Chinese market

Although it was thought that the barely unveiled HyperOS would replace MIUI in all markets, it looks like the future of Xiaomi's software environment is different. HyperOS will be only present in China, while other markets will still receive MIUI. They will use the same core, but HyperOS users will get some exclusive features.

Hm, and Xiaomi Global VP says it's going to be available for everyone:

https://twitter.com/atytse/status/1714100808386777133

"It will come preinstalled w/ the latest Xiaomi 14 flagship series & will gradually replace MIUI."

Also in that same tweet says that it's a "completely new rewritten architecture!" and that it "Yes! Will roll out throughout 2024" for the global market.

Yes, I saw that as well. However, he didn't say anything about the non-flagship devices. Will there be a MIUI 16? Probably not, but MIUI 15 will probably be delivered as an update to older devices and maintained for another year or two. There's also the question about Pengpai/PengpaiOS. Will it launch for a certain category of devices? Maybe just for the Pocos and/or Redmis?

As a final thought, I think Xiaomi is making it all too complicated. What I loved most about my old Mi A1 was Android One. What I hate most about my Mi 10T is, unfortunately, MIUI and the awful update frequency (plus the bugs and lack of China-only features).

Good questions about the MIUI 16 and Pengpai, yes. Both are still infinitely better and more unique names than HyperOS; that one is really VERY weird. Both Xiaomi and Redmi have that mi as a known trademark and a part of their brand recognition, thus it is (was?) in their skin/variant - MIUI. Simple and clear to everyone. This here sounds like something for young teens (those under 16) who find such names attractive or desirable 🤨

Speaking of Android One and *mi phones, in my experience those under "Android Enterprise Recommended" ( https://www.mi.com/global/support/android-enterprise-recommended ) program work pretty much flawlessly with their stable updates which are delivered on a regular frequency of 90 days. I have Redmi 10C now and I'm perfectly happy with it so far, getting regular updates and security fixes ( https://imgur.com/fmzSEn4 ), it will be officially supported to September 2025 I think, pretty damn good for a cheap 2022 phone (I am refusing to pay flagship prices for a phone when you can get a solid laptop for the same cost).

Meanwhile my friend's Redmi Note 9 Pro does not fall under that "Android Enterprise Recommended" and while she has no issues with it those updates are seemingly random both in frequency and battery stability (and they are also somewhat bloated in unnecessary apps, while I have no bloat at all except few easy to uninstall apps, no China-only goodies though). It would be interesting to hear experiences about other phones from that list on their link 🤔

I forgot to mention one thing - Xiaomi is still pretty user-friendly with giving freedom to flash custom ROMs on their phones. It is probably not as easy with all models but they are not strict to make you everything difficult for no particular reason (Samsung, Knox, hmm). So that fact alone is a good bonus in my book.

Yes, indeed. Support for custom ROMs is awesome to have. I will start sharing my custom ROM experiences with Mi 10T Pro in early 2024. Still waiting for MIUI 14 until then... :)

Nice, looking forward to it! 😀
