Fisker just announced a partnership with battery provider Ample that aims to produce Fisker vehicles powered by Ample swappable batteries, starting with business and fleet customers. The partnership aims to deliver its first Ample-powered Fisker Ocean vehicles by the first quarter of 2024. Tesla, on the other hand, seems to have forgotten about battery swapping altogether.

Swappable batteries for EVs makes little sense. Not only has Tesla tried it and people preferred super chargers, it was also tried by Better Place, they had 21 swap stations. And it went bankrupt.

Swappable stations sound great in theory, but you really don't want something massive like a battery being taken in and out of a car, that is asking for problems down the road. It also has the issue of battery ownership and who pays the cost. If the user owns it, he isn't going to want his new battery replaced by old one, and if company owns it they wouldn't want to hold a depreciating asset. Swap stations by nature will also be much more expensive than recharging, and for what? To save 5 minutes?

And most charging happens at home. Which means as EV range continues to improve, the amount of times people need a recharge outside the home decreases as more stuff can be done on 1 charge. And recharge speed will only get faster as well, EVs already can recharge up to 200 miles in 15 minutes
