Valve has confirmed details about its plans to release newer versions of the Steam Deck and the Steam Controller. The company has also disclosed hardware upgrades for the current Steam Deck that would otherwise go unnoticed.

As much as I liked the Steam Controller, I won't buy any more hardware from Valve. I bought the Link which had issues and then got discontinued, and then I bought the controller, which was good but had some definite room for improvement, and it got discontinued. Not really ready to invest in something else that will just end up being discontinued.

Sorry to tell you, but every product does wind up being discontinued eventually.

Obviously, but they were both discontinued pretty quickly, and with the Link the issues, to my knowledge, were never fixed. Also, many products, especially ones like this, are typically superseded rather than straight-up discontinued. Completely discontinuing the controller after so many developers and users put in time to set up configurations for it and users grew accustomed to it, only to not be able to add more to their collection or replace them if they became lost or broken, was just a lousy thing to do. And while they certainly had the right to do so, and while products often are discontinued, it was enough to tell me they're not to be trusted in the future to keep a product line going, and therefore I'd rather not invest in their products. Similar to how Fox and Sci-Fi/SyFy are known for cancelling shows quickly and therefore I will often not bother with their shows because I don't want to get invested only to have them cancelled far too soon.

Steam controller and link still work. In fact, why would they continue to make link when an android app called steam link does the same thing.

Steam controller 1 still works and can be paired with steam dock.

Maybe valve should just focus on being able to distribute worldwide before they release a "new" steam deck? Getting one in Oceania is almost impossible

Well you are kind of all over the place.

Yeah, there were issues with the Steam link. An you know what they did, they made it better. They turned it into a app/software that is free. So you don't need to pay for anything and don't need any extra hardware.

The steam controller was awesome, but wasn't popular till they clearanced it out. But the steam controller made way for the steam deck.

An the best part! Valve still supports both the original links and steam controllers. An because there is such an active community around the steam controller, it made getting optimized control schemes for the deck super easy.

So no, nothing you said makes any sense.

I bought the Steam Link hardware. It never worked well. And instead of fixing it, they discontinued it and moved on. At least from what I saw. I don't care about software, because that's not what I paid for, and it still requires a device to use, hence the Steam Link purchase in the first place. Not sure if you're aware, but apps/software need hardware to run, so yeah, you kinda do need extra hardware.

I bought the Steam Controller. I spent time getting used to it and setting up games to work with it, as did others. They discontinued it without offering a replacement, so I can't get additional or replacement controllers, meaning the one I have is all I have for the time I've put into it.

I don't give a rats a$$ about the Deck; I don't want a handheld gaming device. So the fact the controller led to that is meaningless to me. Sorry I don't feel great about the product I bought being a mere stepping stone to another, completely different product.

Nothing you said makes any sense, including how that's "all over the place." But something I'd expect from someone with clear reading comprehension issues.

Steam Controller was discontinued like four years after it was introduced (2015-2019), yet it *still* works perfectly software wise (hardware can be different, naturally).  I use it to this day to play FFXIV

I never said it didn't. It's about investing in, for lack of a better term, an ecosystem, then having that ecosystem essentially disappear. If my controller were to break, that would be it. I would have to transition to another controller with a completely different feel and layout and lose all the customizations. I'd rather not adjust to something just to have to adjust back. I get it not everyone feels that way, and that's fine. I'm just saying that's how I feel about it and, more to the point, the fact Valve seems to have a habit of releasing and discontinuing products makes me not want to bother with them, because I don't want to get invested in something that's just going to be discontinued.
