Socket AM4 will continue well past its prime, AMD feels there's no reason to buy an Intel processor now

Socket AM4 has proven to be hugely successful for AMD primarily due to the compatibility it offers with all Ryzen CPUs to date including the new Ryzen 3rd generation processors. AMD says that the AM4 socket will continue for the foreseeable future until there is a major inflection point in the platform.

I miss when laptops were more modular.  The MSI GT60 I bought back in 2013 was nearly completely upgradable for its time. I upgraded the CPU (from i7 3630QM to 3920XM), added RAM, upgraded WiFi twice, added SSDs, and even upgraded the graphics card to a 970M thanks to the MXM slot, a modified BIOS, and a little heatsink grinding.  That thing still performs very well.

I'd love to see something like that again.  Unfortunately, OEMs tend to think of laptops as disposable, so if something happens, it'll just get replaced.

Biggest thing AMD needs to add to their laptops is Thunderbolt support. It's going to become even more widespread since Intel has it built-in to the Ice Lake chips.  The external controllers aren't expensive.  Add them to AMD laptops there's nothing Intel will have over them.
