The "battery update from hell" is included right out of the box on the Google Pixel 10, the Pixel 10 Pro (XL) and the Pixel 10 Pro Fold. Users can do nothing to prevent the reduction of battery capacity and charging speed over time, short of replacing the battery.

What Google is doing here isn't slowing down the CPU like Apple's infamous "Batterygate" did. Instead, after 200 cycles (which is just about 6 to 7 months of daily usage), the system starts capping the maximum voltage of the battery.

- The Pro: Lowering the maximum voltage reduces chemical stress and heat, which theoretically prevents the battery from degrading too fast or swelling.

- The Con: By lowering the voltage, Google is artificially reducing your usable battery capacity and slowing down charging speeds from day one. Some users who tested this on older Pixels (where the feature could still be toggled off) noted that it felt like having a permanent 80% charge limit.
