To the disappointment of some buyers, the ROG Xbox Ally and ROG Xbox Ally X won't include an OLED screen. An Asus representative explained that VRR took precedence over the expense introduced by OLED. With the Xbox UI expected to arrive on other Windows handhelds, gamers may soon have alternatives.

An obvious choice, in my opinion.

It's honestly puzzling why some of the earlier handhelds came out with 144Hz/1440p/OLED displays which weren't capable of VRR, given the low wattage APUs used in most of these systems. VRR was practically developed for this exact scenario, where you're limited to 30-45 FPS and need the display to dynamically change its refresh rate, to prevent ugly screen tearing.

LCDs tend to hold up much better in bright ambient conditions than OLED displays, which is obviously useful for a portable device.
