There were more people that didn't vote in this election, than all the the people that voted for either candidate. Something like 30% of the country actually voted for him. Probably 10-20% were hardcore cult fanatic fanbase and an additional 10% from those disenfranchised with the democrats or that were on the undecided sidelines and picked him for one reason or the other. He won by a very slim margin of extra votes vs the other candidate.
It should never have been this close to begin with. It's just the other side got so comfortable getting free votes for decades while doing nothing for their constituents and the people got tired of it.
There was also substantial evidence of ballot tampering in the election. Stuff like people from marginalized communities votes being thrown away and additional votes given to trump that by people who hadn't or didn't even exist. So the voting system is somewhat systematically rigged anyway.
