Lenovo ThinkPad T14s: AMD Ryzen 7 Pro 4750U leaves Intel in the dust

After the ThinkPad T14s with the Intel Comet Lake processor, we also received the ThinkPad T14s with the AMD Ryzen 7 Pro 4750U processor. Our initial benchmarks show that the AMD CPU  is much faster, despite similar power consumption figures.

I swear there is some f****g conspiracy here. ALL new Ryzen laptops everywhere are gimped in some intentional way. Most often with a crap screen or cheap chassis. Case in point; no Ryzen Lenovo laptops are available with 4k screens, yet intel variants are.
Yet the Ryzen chips are clearly way ahead compared to intel. Just look at the comparison here with the 15W CPU almost matching the Intel 45W+ in a 17" chassis. The intel CPUs are just terrible from a power/performance perspective.
Does intel bribe these manufacturers to intentionally limit Ryzen laptops?

Looking good! Can you test the Linux compatibility in your detailed review please?

Are they going to release Renoir X1 Carbon anytime soon? I want a powerful cpu in a premium hardware.

They likely do.

The price is indeed nice. The table with specifications gave me a pause. But given it lacks OS (while the Intel version comes with Windows), it's probably one of those Campus models for students. So, you're comparing apples with oranges. Seriously, IMHO, student pricing has no business here. It always annoyed me since you only do this with Lenovo (perhaps there were some exceptions, but mainly Lenovo). And you have the audacity to praise the low price. That most people can't get. This isn't a university magazine. Makes no sense to me.

Hi, both versions are Campus models. They tend to be available much sooner than standard retail models. We will obviously include the pricing for the regular counterparts in our reviews.

Perhaps. Or it's as simple as lack of confidence. Perhaps a combination of factors. OEMs make plenty of questionable decisions for systems with Intel processors as well. You'd have to ask the product manager behind closed doors. Also, "4k" screen in a 14"? I wouldn't want one even if it was a free option. Even if it was matte, which it isn't. However, there is no accounting for taste.

I just checked prices and I'm surprised how relatively cheap the screen is (relatively to the 400 nit FHD). On the other hand, the brighter FHD is €165 extra compared to the base 250 nit unit (at least for the Intel version). That stings. I though it used to be something like 50 or even less. And QHD was something like 400. Perhaps I'm confusing it with the X1 Extreme.

I thought Campus models don't come with Windows. So, I can expect the retail version with 4750U, 32 GB RAM and 1 TB SSD to sell for similar price as 10210U, 8 GB RAM and 256 GB SSD? Four times the RAM, four times the storage for roughly the same price. That would be awesome.

It wasn't in the road map. Perhaps next generation. Just get the T14s. It's close enough and even better in some ways. And be glad you have such a selection in 14" (the biggest of all sizes of ThinkPads).

Ayoh

Im not necessarily advocating for 4k on 14". A 2560p screen is mcuh better. However i would like a wide gamut 500nit screen for photo editing and that is only available as a 4k variant and only on the Intel models. This is the case for ALL Lenovo AMD laptops - the screen options are intentionally limited.

I think it was stupid of Lenovo to move from the 500nit wide gamut 2560p screen of the X1 gen 6 generation up to 4k in all the new 14" premium models. The old one was the perfect screen for the size

How did you get thinkpad without that malware called Windows 10?

When will you test T14amd?

No...AMD is just lazy and doesn't invest $ in partnerships with OEMs. They expect OEMs to do their work.

Yeah, i can't agree more! Have been thinking that there must be some sort of bribery by Intel :/
