Title: HP Spectre Folio 13 (i5-8500Y) Convertible Review
Post by: Redaktion on November 23, 2018, 19:43:01
HP is putting a new spin on laptop convertibles inspired by antique cameras and wristwatches. The one-of-a-kind leather design is both premium and classic, but its size, weight, and features fall a bit short compared to the sleek and modern metal Ultrabook.

I'm always surprised when reviewers come up with what are obviously unreasonable predictions for battery life.  In this case, let's face it -- the Spectre Folio is basically a Spectre in leather.  And as I learned when using the Spectre 13 for several months, HP's and other claims for battery duration were FAR beyond actual use of the laptop.  Spectre 13 claims were 9+ hours.  Here, you are saying that the Folio can provide up to 14 hours.  I wouldn't bet on that, and would urge everyone considering the Folio to treat such predictions cautiously.  Even with the increase in battery watt hours from the Spectre 13, I would predict that the Folio will not get much beyond 5 or 6 hours in constant use.

That isn't a prediction, its a measurement. Can't you see the difference? Notebookcheck's measurements are realistic. I bought an ultrabook after seeing a review here.

Of course you aren't going to get that all the time. If you are getting 5 hours of battery life out of *this* device, then you should just get a desktop, because you are doing something quite intensive with screen brightness all the way up or something.

If you are browsing the web or watching videos, then yes 14 hours is quite realistic. I assume depending on what you are doing it might even exceed that. You shouldn't need full brightness anyway. 20-40% brightness setting is good enough, and there's probably the side benefit that your eyes will thank you.

Maybe you are quite new to laptops and computers in general.

Hey guys, is this SKU using the 1W LP display that HP advertised during announcement?

I've had a Spectre Folio (i7 8GB 1080p WWAN model) for the past 2 weeks, and I've thoroughly enjoyed it.

The review does cover all the positives but does miss out the 'feel' of the PC a little. It feels refined, capable and the long battery life and flexible modes, without obvious drawbacks such as poor lapability of the Surface Pro 6.

Is it perfect - not at all! It's considerably heavier than other comparable 2-in-1s; the performance is very acceptable for most productivity, but not for gamers; the pen loop is low-tech (stuck on the rear of the display) and the pen often gets in the way of my unfolding the device. The 1080p display is obviously not as sharp the 4K display (although it's perfectly adequate and the extra battery life is more useful).

That said, as an overall package, it's very good. If you're looking for devices to compare it with, I'd suggest the new 2018 MacBook Air - it has similar performance, added LTE, better battery life, a touchscreen and a pen included for an extra $100.

I think the processor mentioned in the title is incorrect, it should read i7-8500Y not 15....
