Title: Apple MacBook Pro 2018: Much more performance with a few clicks
Post by: Redaktion on July 21, 2018, 00:42:37
The new MacBook Pros have problems with the performance utilization of the Coffee Lake processors. We show why Apple's power management fails and how you can fix it with just a few clicks. This applies for the smaller 13-inch as well as the 15-inch MacBook Pro, both for macOS and Windows 10.

Could you run the same tests with the fans forced to run at maximum speed all the time? SMCFancontrol in Mac and Speedfan in Windows should be able to do that.

Wondering if that would help clock fluctuations. Thanks!

SMCFanControl is broken as of macOS 10.12 (maybe earlier?) but Macs Fan Control works on 10.12+ and has much of the same functionality, though MFC isn't quite as granular as SMCFanControl was.

Did you found a program that could be used for undevolting the intel CPU under Mac OS?  :D

In my case, SMCFan Control 2.6 is running well on MacBook air 2013 Mac OS 10.12.6. It is still able to increase the minimum fan speed, while the increment of the fan speed is still controlled by Mac OS if needed (eg: hot temp). ;)
It is also working together with Macs Fan Control 1.4.10 (as long as used for monitoring temps and fan speed only).  :)

Furthermore, did anyone found a program that could be used for undevolting the intel CPU under Mac OS?  :D

Volta also can undervolt the CPU in Mac OS, would be great if you can test it  ;)

After all the problem is from Apple and not intel cpu. garbage os with ppl who have no ideia how to build and configure a laptop

Nice.

Can you test the 15" with an even lower TDP? Like 35W, as per Intel TDP-down spec? I wonder if this would reduce fluctuations even more with little performance penality and cooler temperatures.

Thank you!

I got totally stable speeds with the i7 by setting TDP in Volta to 38W. Undervolting made no noticeable difference.

Here is my guide to undervolt in Mac OS X:

I appreciate the tests and findings. BUT: Is after undervolting the new MacBook 15 with i7 and i9 more powerful for rendering a 4k video the other Macbooks 2017 and 2018 and also than Dells XPS 15? We need a verdict for buy or not buy or what to buy to get the best results even after undervolting. Thanks!

How about this update?  :)
Will the patch shows a better overall performance without undervolt or limitting the TDP?
