Title: HP Pavilion 15 Power (i7-7700HQ, GTX 1050) Laptop Review
Post by: Redaktion on July 03, 2017, 20:32:16
Power play. HP is pushing the limits on how powerful a Pavilion system can be without calling it a gaming notebook. The Pavilion 15 Power is the best and potentially most expensive in the series yet.

Hello! (hopefuly Allen is watching),

So I've been looking for a laptop for the past week, and I got my eye in the HP Pavilion Power 15 but couldn't find any reviews online. So definitely, yours has helped to clear my mind when it came out. I think this is a great piece of technology but both the heat and noise made by the fans is what is holding me back from making a decision.

I will be using this laptop for engineering purposes (student of a Masters in Electrical Engineering and IT), but in certain occasions I may use it for gaming purposes. Therefore, I'm looking for something that is portable, has a really decent battery life (around 8 h for web browsing, playing youtube videos, writing documentation in word, and running code in Matlab), is powerful in terms of processor (I think i7-7700HQ is the best one can find around nowadays).

So my questions are:

-Is the heat on the right palm area and on the core of the laptop where it can get up to 60º such a reality, or only when it gets pushed to the max (considering I might be using it on my lap)?

- Is the noise so noticeable to be annoying over time?

-The other laptop I'm considering is a Dell Inspiron 15 7000 7567, which I know is way heavier, and the TN screen is apparently really bad in quality, but the rest is really similar or even better. Which one would be your recommendation?

Sorry for the second post, sent it without finishing.

-A third and final option I'm considering is the Lenovo Yoga 720-15, which looks really portable, powerful enough for my needs and with decent memory for storage.

Thank you very much for your time, and thank you for such an awesome page and work reviewing these laptops.

Can you link that maintenance guide? I'm not finding it on the CUKUSA website and you're not kidding about how hard it is to crack the shell on this one!

Hello,

For information you can disable the option "Fans always active" in the BIOS, in day-to-day browsing loads and without a HDD, the laptop is completly quiet.

Hello Sir , Actually we have Same term here , im also electrical engineering student majoring in computer , i think so that dell inspiron is too heavy ,and the latest one is from asus nv580vd same specs with thinner body and fingerprint , but the disadvantage of that asus is because it just have about 40wh battery , that make me think the more thinner of that laptop it become useless because lack of battery life ,, but this hp pavilion power 15 is lack of review , which is make me more curios about this laptops.

Yes, with no HDD the laptop is complety quiet. Obviously, if you play or make more intensive tasks, the fan is activated.

I read the specs about the HP pavilion 15 power on the HP website, it says that the usb-C supports DP 1.2, is it true? I haven't seen any review confirming this so I'm taking the specs from HP's website with a grain of salt

Hello,
I purchased this laptop and although I disabled the "fan always on" option in the BIOS they always run, even at idle. Any ideas? I've already updated the BIOS, reset windows, changed the power plan. I'm desperate, please help.

P.s I have the configuration with the core i5 7300HQ, the GTX 1050 and the hard drive.

From the Performance section:

Quote... the i5-7300HQ will be over 30 percent slower than the quad-core i7-7700HQ in multi-threaded workloads since it is a dual-core chip.

The i5-7300HQ a dual core? Check that again: https://ark.intel.com/products/97456/Intel-Core-i5-7300HQ-Processor-6M-Cache-up-to-3_50-GHz (https://ark.intel.com/products/97456/Intel-Core-i5-7300HQ-Processor-6M-Cache-up-to-3_50-GHz)
Title: Undervolting
Post by: Robert on November 21, 2017, 19:06:12
There are reviews/consumer feedbacks from various other websites (i.e. system with similar config: i7-7700, GTX1050, HHD and SSD) stating that it gets unbearably hot when gaming.

Does anyone have a similar experience here?

Does anyone actually try to undervolt the system and gain successful outcome?

I have been using this laptop for over a year since I bought in on August 2017. It will be very hot out of the box but I managed to undervolt it at -140mV at the core and -125 cache, temps for the CPU and GPU never exceeded 80 degrees C. The palm rest will NEVER get unbearably hot even after my 4 hour long gaming sessions with AAA games but it WILL make your palms sweaty.

But the battery life after undervolting is so good, I was able to get 10+ hours out of it reading documents and a little over 7 hours browsing the web. I also removed the HDD, replaced it with a NVME SSD and disabled the "Fan Always on" option in the BIOS. Fans never ramps up at any time on battery unless I'm gaming or rendering, but does ramp up sometimes when I'm plugged in. Essentially making it dead silent most of the time.

Overall, never regretted owning this laptop. (After I replaced the stock touchpad drivers with Windows Precision Drivers)

Maximum load with Prime95 and FurMark will draw 106 W from a power adapter (~14.0 x 6.5 x 2.5 cm) rated for up to 150 W. This is an unusually high power overhead which isn't necessarily bad, but a smaller and more portable 130 W or 140 W adapter would have worked just as well.

This will not work because the laptop demand 7.7 A from the adopter, and the normal voltage of laptop nowadays being 19.5, there is no way to get an adopter with 120W with that current needed for laptop, putting a 120w adopted the laptop will underperform and the clock of the CPU will not go above 0.79 Ghz
Title: Compatibility with Photoshop

I am struggling with Photoshop. The app opens and then freeze and I just can't use Photoshop... Is this laptop compatible ? Do I need to change some settings in order to make it work ?
Thank you for helping me.

Fixed Heat issues by modding the fan. By cutting blue wires on the fans you can force a constant fan speed, and by disabling turbo boost the laptop stays quite cool while gaming.
For the best experience I'd play games 720p, if you can pick this laptop up cheap; its worth it. For those wondering, vr is possible with ASW enabled and a 20% render scale in steam vr and a multisample resolution of 4.0 in the wmr driver settings file.
The laptop has a spare ram slot, definitely worth adding an extra 4gb of ram to the laptop; as windows 10 loves to chew through ram when idling. The laptop also has a m.2 ssd slot as well that supports a maximum configuration of 256gb I believe. £20 or equivalent would get you a cheap ssd which I think is necessary because hard drives are too slow for everyday function and speeds up the computer considerably.
If you are willing to toy around, and you can get this laptop cheap £400~£500 or equivalent; its a great gaming machine.

Audio output quality is terrible. Anything connected to USB ports causes loud audible interference.
