Title: Lenovo Legion Y520 15IKBN (7700HQ, FHD, GTX 1050 Ti) Laptop Review
Post by: Redaktion on May 28, 2017, 02:27:25
Subdued, yet capable. Lenovo's latest budget gaming notebook may not possess the pomp and showmanship of the Legion Y720, but it still manages reasonably good performance—even in spite of its relatively affordable price tag. We take it for a (lengthy) spin in our full review.

Wow, the WASD area remains surprisingly very cool! This is my dream for any notebooks. A notebook that I can play without my hands getting wet due to overheating. The display is unfortunately mediocre but other than that, Lenovo seems to me made a good job!

Are you planning to review Gigabyte Sabre 15 (GTX 1050)?

Cant wait to compare it with this Lenovo.

Thanks.

Something seems to be a bit off with the gaming benchmarks. How can the 1050Ti in Lennovo be scoring more fps than the 1060 in Y720?

Hey Nishant!

I actually ran that benchmark twice because it also took me by surprise.  However, that was only the case with the Bioshock Infinite benchmarks -- the others seem perfectly in line with what you'd expect.  Not sure how to explain it, but the results I received aren't out of the ordinary for this GPU.

Thank you for this review.
I'm considering buying this laptop for semi-professional music production when I travel. The only potential problem is its HDD rotation speed. Usually, 7200rpm is advised. But nowadays, maybe recent 5400rpm offer a higher read/write rate than 7200rpm 3 years ago ... ? Any opinion about that? I would have liked to see a HDD review and speed test.
Best regards,
J

I have it for about 5 months now. All great, fast, reliable, no problems at all.
Keyboard is great for me. Actually the keys are greatly made, as they are praised on every review.

There is a 3GB 1060 (i7, 8gb) version which is strangely cheaper than 4GB 1050ti version. I am planning to add a 16gb module. The display is a bit poor but almost all the gaming laptops in this range have the same issue. Games run smoothly. The dolby thing is really annoying. And dual boot is a pain.
Title: What about the Lenovo Legion Y520 15IKBM with ssd & 1060gtx
Post by: Dominic_gr on February 02, 2018, 02:35:55
Hello sir,

I am recently a fan of your writing and reviewing.
Saying this, i would like (if you read and and kindly respond) to tell me if your rating as mentioned above (81%) will be different for the Lenovo Legion Y520 15IKBM model that comes with with 256ssd & 1060gtx card, with a good price still on the market. I am asking because i am considering a purchase on this model, but in general when i searched about it i couldnt find any concrete review - only for the Y520 15IBN

With regards,

Dominic

Hello

I have the Legion Y520 but with a GTX 1050 and not TI.

I see in your test that you put the disk controller in AHCI mode.

Is this really useful ? Is the performance difference significant ? I tested Subnautica in Intel RST and AHCI and saw no performance difference. Plus you canot reinitialize windows in AHCI mode.

Upgraded grandsons Lenovo Y520-15IKBN.  I replaced way to small drive 1 SSD boot device "C:" with DATARAM Internal SSD, PCIe NVMe M.2 2280 Solid State Drive, PCIe Gen3 8Gb/s (1TB) and spinning drive 0 storage device "D:" with Crucial BX500 1TB 3D NAND SATA 2.5-inch SSD.  Also replaced memory and maxed out to 32 GB of memory.

Did what Microsoft calls flatten, and what I call "NUKE" and repave.  Clean install of Windows 10.

Setup so User directory was on "D:", and left everything else default to "C:".  Added software for RAMDRIVE "R:" and set as location for temp files to R:\TEMP for standard user, and left default for administrative user as some software still have issues on program installation with anything other than defaults.  Programs work fine for standard user with temp files set to R:\TEMP after they are installed.

Now the unit is running both faster, and cooler.
