Title: ThrottleStop Primer
Post by: Redaktion on April 15, 2017, 18:07:39
ThrottleStop is one of the most useful programs for any PC user, but it can be intimidating to use at first glance. This primer walks readers through installing ThrottleStop, explains its basic features and functions, and guides them through some basic optimizations that any user could benefit from.

Hi! A long time Throttlestop (and Notebookcheck too!) user here.
Just a heads up, Clock Modulation % still works on my Skylake i7-6700HQ CPU. Try reducing the percentage and run TS bench, you will see it actually takes longer to finish the benchmark.

Thank you for this valuable Information package, I could review my Obsidian adjustment quite well, after understanding some detailes, I had issues with shutdowns I could repair.

Deplorable the Fivr option is not activated on my application, so I have no possibility to apply the chapter "Undervolting", but I will look in my Bios for a activation. I have Thermal issues, so I am interested on all options to lower power consumption.

Hey--just wanted to drop a note to say thanks for this extremely helpful guide. I can't believe I haven't heard of this program until now, and it was super easy to set up thanks to your instructions! Does this program work on desktop computers as well? Would love to see more advanced guides!

It should work on your desktop CPU, but it is more geared towards mobiles. Intel XTU is designed for their K-series unlocked desktop CPUs.

Title: speed shift profiles
Post by: Mounteder on September 24, 2017, 19:09:06
Hey, amazing explanation but I got a problem. I can't change the speedshift values per profile. If I change it t0 196 on battery and save that and then go to game to change the speedshift values there, it would also be 196. And after I would have changed that value it would also be changed for my battery profile. Any suggestions?

This saved my XPS 15 9560! Before undervolting the temperatures would hit 97 degrees during massive load and now they are around 81 max. Could you explain whether the readings of C0% - around 99 constantly - mean something?

Thank you!

It's strange, I used Throttlestop to undervolt my i7-7700HQ by -0.120V and I'm still not seeing improvements in my package temperatures when running stress tests.

I would like to know if I can used it and if yes How to stop the "idle CPU" sound (kind a sound like morse code/electrical) I don't really know if it's due to the CPU but I read that it's the c4 state or something like that whom cause this sound. I got a brand new HP Spectre x360 15 and don't want to change it if it's a commun sound to all the CPU's Laptop. I'm still on warranty so ....

Can you add an option to limit TDP per profile? Would allow a "silent" mode with reduced fan speed.

Hi Bluesette. Remember that temperature and clock speed have a relationship with each other. Your laptop might be set to limit temperature at a maximum of 80C, and previously it may have been slowing the processor significantly to achieve this temperature. Now it might be slowing the processor to a lesser extent before hitting 80C.

e.g.
- Before: CPU runs at 3.0 GHz until it hits 80C, then slows to 1.5 GHz to avoid going over this temperature.
- After: CPU runs at 3.0 GHz until it hits 80C, then slows to 2.5 GHz to avoid going over this temperature.

Normal is all relative. If you're using a thick 17-inch gaming laptop with a dual-fan cooling setup and mid-range components, then that'd be abnormal. If you're using a laptop that is considered thin for the type of hardware it is packing (e.g. an ultrabook form-factor with a dedicated GPU, then that would be normal.

Among my desktops and laptops is a 13-inch ultrabook with an MX150. When gaming it can quickly get to 80C unless I do things like use a cooling pad etc.

About all this does is gets me overloaded. I just have the problem with my dell 5110 where it is not charging the battery or doesn't like the ac adapter. (I'm pretty sure it's fine). I would just like to get to where the laptop thinks the battery and charger are ok so it will modulate the multiplier. I used the advice of uncheck BD PROCHOT. Will that do what I want or how should I set thngs? Thanks.

Unneeded app. Just set Max. CPU utilization to 99% in power options of the selected profile (usually "balanced"). I usually set it only to the battery mode setting, as I want full power when I'm on the charger.

Hi! I come here to get help! I've a lenovo ideapad 520 with intel i5-8250U and GPU is mx150. I like playing csgo but the cpu temp was too hard when I set fps too high ( this game can lock fps with the console when you enable develop mode) but when fps I lock 60fps, the cpu temp was good ( around 60-70 degree). I used throttlestop and set volt offset for my cpu is -90.8 mV and set the speedshift is 170. But I changed lots of times setting in throttlestop but when in game cpu always got 70-80 degree and the fps was not so good. Here is a video that have same my laptop, his cou and fps was so good! ( can post the link, please search on youtube play csgo intel core i5-8250u mx150) .So, someone can help me fix this?! Or maybe I just can play 60fps on my lap?

Hi,
How do you undervolt a laptop GPUs with 2 GPU's on the motherboard (an intel and nvidia gpu).
How do you proceed?
f.ex. Do you have to check the NVIDIA checkbox, even if there is a second Intel GPU inside etc?

Thanks for any help!

I have used throttle stop to under volt my laptop cpu and to disable the thermal throttling. It works great however it changed my laptop's power consumption. Instead of drawing the normal 6watts doing nothing it uses 13 or 14 watts. Even after uninstalling y laptop is still like this, the only solution i have found is getting a fresh start on windows.

Hey guys,
i used XTU before and then i tried throttlestop. Before i tried Throttlestop i set everything on default at XTU, but unfortunatly i forgot to deinstall XTU. When i now start XTU it says that de default value of the CPU is -89, thats where i put it in throttelstop.
Will this cause any damage now, should i still deinstall XTU?
Thanks in advance

Despite it's a very informative article, for me full procedure is still unclear.
For my scenario I'd like to start undervolting only while gaming, so that I thought I can create a UV profile and launch TS only when needed (actually associated to a profile of Dragon center of my MSI). How to achieve this?
Doubts:
1) Playing with FIVR values and pressing "ok - save voltages immediately" will take effect if you don't have pressed "Turn on"?
2) Once you press "Turn on", what "Turn off" does since to really turn off you have to delete ini file and shut off? Will the changes remain active even if TS don't launch at startup?

Thanks.

As far as I'm aware, there isn't any benefit to bringing your voltage back up to default. If you're system is stable with an offset of -0.125V, then bringing it back up to 0V just means that that extra voltage is wasted (as heat). Chip manufacturers set that default value high, so that 99.99...% of processors will work, which also means that same percentage of chips are wasting at least some power.

If you are still getting .dll error make sure you installed both x64 and x86 versions of Microsoft 2013 Redistributable.

I resolved the 0x000007b error by installing the x64 Visual C++ 2013 Redistributable (vcredist_x64.exe), and then copying mfc120u.dll and msvcr120.dll from C:\Windows\SysWOW64 to the ThrottleStop directory.

Hi. I am Intisar. I am using AsusPro P2440UA with inter core i3 7100U for almost one and half year. Recently several months ago my laptop crashed and after then the CPU always stuck at 0.38 GHz. Sometimes when I work the Pc suddenly gets hot and the CPU gets down to bottom. And it continuously stuck there. I have done a lot of research on this. Then I gave a shot on ThrottleStop. However I have done the undervolting but the problems seems to be the same if I don't overclock means when I don't uncheck the BD PROCHOT. I have undervolted my CPU CORE and CACHE to -79 degrees and GPU to -32 degrees. But It doesn't work if I don't stop the BD PROCHOT and overclock the CPU. But I am scared whether It will damage the PC! Can You Help Please?

Hi, my laptop has rather nasty coil whine, which immediately goes away as soon as I disable turbo boost.

So I created a "quiet" profile without turbo boost and a "fast" profile with turbo boost. Basically I only need "fast" mode whenever I compile something complex using TeX. So it would be super nice if I could configure ThrottleStop to switch between profiles depending on whether the PDFLATEX.EXE process is currently running or not.

Is that possible? I was unable to find any option in TS or any related info online. Thanks a lot!

Hello there!
I was undervolting my Intel (R) Core(TM) i7-8750H CPU @2.20GHz at -125mV and everything went fine. I tried -140mV and I tried the TS Bench again and the score was red so not as good as the -125mV. Does that make anything different? Should I stay at -125mV or go up further. And my Laptop didnt crash on either.
