Title: Review Samsung ATIV Book 9 Plus 940X3G Ultrabook
Post by: Redaktion on October 09, 2013, 04:22:13
Pixel frenzy. Retina is a thing of the past. Samsung stirs up the competition with a sensational QHD+ screen and even beats the MacBook series from Apple. Comprised of an energy-efficient Haswell CPU, 4 GB of RAM and a 128 GB SSD, the ATIV Book 9 Plus is to fight for the lead in the ultrabook sector - an ambitious undertaking.

"Anyone looking for a slim ultrabook in the 13 inch category really cannot complain about not enough options."

Sure we can, the lack of a matte screen option among haswell ultrabooks is painful. I hope you plan to review the new 13" and 14" Fujitsu Lifebooks S904 and U904. These seem to be the only ones with a high quality matte screen though I am worried about the keyboard and cooling as the other lifebooks did not get good reviews on the keyboard and cooling and those are kind of important.

4 GB RAM and 128 GB storage are a 2007 thing but certainly there will be people willing to compromise. Just look at the Mac Air.

This is SSD storage. I'd rather have just 128 GB of SSD storage than 10 TB of hard disk storage.

I took delivery of the 9 Plus six weeks ago and am thrilled every time I use it...even look at it. While waiting for it to arrive I bought an external speaker because ultra-books always have anemic speakers right? The stock speakers blow away the unit I bought separately. Gawd the viewing angles are a deliverance from my four yr.old Lenovo U450P. With Haswell I get much improved run time. Boot time is a Houdini act. My high intensity productivity days are behind me so 4G RAM is fine. The form factor is considerably smaller the the MBA's but the screen is the same 13.3". That's difficult to achieve. I'll be on the road almost permanently and the total package of power and portability is just ideal for me.

Does someone know how this high resolution works with Ubuntu or Fee BSD?

No comparison with the Asus Zenbook Infinity UX301LA?

It is more expensive than the macbook pro from october 2013

And the macbook pro has 8 GB ram and an Intel iris graphik card.plus it has 256GB hard drive
Free software like ilive numbers pages and keynote.
the MBP has better performance and better battery live and the screen is almost the same.

Or for 2000$ you can buy the 15inch MBP which has Intel Iris Pro Graphics.

And any macbook pro has more ports than this computer, like thunderbolt 2 or several usb ports.

Or you can compare it to the macbook air which is not as good as the samsung computer but which is only 1200$ and even lighter. ::)

Plus nothing beets the apple customer care.

I once had an 5 year old ipod and when it broke they just gave me the new version of it for free even though the warranty was up for at least 4 years. ;D
Another thing the macbook pro looks so much nicer and when apple releases a new operating system you get it for free and not several hundred bucks like with windows.

So please think twice before you buy this computer. ::)

And by the way it does look quite good. ;)

And I forgot to mention that the MBP has the wifi 802.11 ac which as they say in the article is a lot more expensive and faster

Hello,

Can Notebookcheck run a MobileMark 2012 test (Standard Battery Productivity Load) for this laptop both in 1920x1080 and 3200x1800 modes? I'm mostly interested in how much it lags behind MBA 13" (Mid 2013) in 1080p mode.

Thanks!

In our opinion, the third input device, the capacitive touchscreen, does not really provide a genuine added value. If Samsung omitted that and installed a matte screen instead, the ultrabook would be even better...

I agree 100%.  Screw this touch screen nonsense and start putting matte screens in.  At least as options!

Someone finally got it right with the Zenbook Prime, UX31A, and then Intel goes and forces glossy screens on everyone.  What a pair of losers Intel and Microsoft have been with this Win8Metro/Touchscreen nonsense.  No wonder people are flocking to Macs in droves these days.  If they keep this up, I'll be one of them.

On Amazon there are now two versions of this - one ending in K01US and a new one ending in K06US. The latter is $100 more expensive than the older one. Any idea what the difference is?

As of July 2014 with all the latest drivers installed, the problem with faulty yellow color is only present as the brightness is set to maximum. This causes the yellow to go awry. In all other positions the yellow is OK even if there is indeed a non critical tint of green present. So this error is no a very minor one.

Update: Nov. 2013: Samsung has a patch you can download here and install that will correct yellows. I highly recommend it.
