"permanently audible fan" is solved by turning it off from the BIOS. All HP laptops come with it enabled.
Total piece of crap don't waste your money. The hybrid graphics suck donkey. Good luck getting the 7650m GPU to actually work. Called HP and of course their tech support is no help. Their suggestion...reinstall windows. I have a 1.5 year old toshiba with a GT550m that runs circles around this thing. Avoid this laptop. You have been warned.

Does turning "fan always on" off really solve the problem ? Does the fan totally stop in idle mode ?
Is it possible to dedicate more ram memory to this intel hd 4000? it show's me that it is only 64 mb and i dont have option in bios to change it.. Is there any way to change it on 128 or more???
Great Display, nice keyboard , graphic drivers works great on windows, on linux there is a little problem with radeon driver but AMD works on it so with 3.10 kernel it would be great.

Great laptop for upgrades. It takes any Ivy Bridge CPU, can easily replace HD to SSD, same for WiFi cards (no whitelist) and LVDS cable from 4740S (50.4RY03.001) allows screen upgrade to 1080P
About "fan noise". It is reduced "in idle" to 2600rpm comparing to 4530S(3200rpm). Widely available programs can push it even further to 1900rpm.

it's so good but i am still surprised why there is no fingerprint?

install drivers it will be cool as ice! first install softpaq from hp and then softpaq will find other drivers and then your problem will be solved!

I was just given this laptop at work and I absolutely hate it with passion.
Is big, is heavy, is bulky.
In order to keep the keyboard centered in your hands, you have to move the laptop towards the right (or left, if you are left handed). But then is not centered within your field of vision. And if you center the screen so that the webcam is pointing straight at your face, then you'll have to slide your hands towards your left side. If you need to type a lot, that's very uncomfortable!
The earphones and microphone ports are at the front of the laptop, again, very awkward position, and gets in the way when you are typing.
Finally, the think pad is a nightmare. The laptop is so poorly designed that your hand will keep brushing on the pad so the cursor will move all over the place when you are typing. Then to make matters worse, I could no disable the touch pad because the computer came with no drivers for it!!! I had to find the drivers myself and install them just so I could disable the **** thing.
Worst laptop ever. Hate it hate it hate it.
Didn't even notice the fan noise until i read this article. Other than that everything works superb.
finger print reader missing from my 4540s only a lid is placed on the reader position

According to the price this Laptop is one of the best laptop i've ever used. I bought it 1.5 years back till now it's just running fine without any hardware trouble at all. At that time with this budget it was a very cool laptop. The fingerprint reader just working fine. By far this is a very good laptop as a desktop replacement. I am using windows 8 and till now I've got more or less every driver updates from HP. Faced problem with the connectify app but HP has their own wifi hotspot making soft. Till now I am getting 2-2.30 hours battery backup. Generates more heat than other branded laptops. I would definitely recommend to anyone to purchase this laptop. :) :) :)

Got this one with i5 processor, 8gb ram and 512 ssd. So far my best notebook and i pretty happy with it. I must mention that i never use it unplugged and never used its keyboard as i always have my favourite full keyboard. This one was worth every penny. BTW, it was serviced once....noisy cooler.

It's 2023 and my 4540s still standing strong for everyday tasks. Took out cd/dvd burner/reader and added ssd to existing HDD, added 4 more gb ram. WIFI card stopped working, use external adapter. Everything else still works great.
