Gotion's Michigan factory may be for the newly unveiled LMFP cell with 240 Wh/kg energy density that would allow 600-mile range on a charge. It could ultimately end up in Tesla or other US automakers as the plant would supply "a large listed automobile company in the United States" with LFP batteries.https://www.notebookcheck.net/Tesla-Model-Y-energy-density-beating-LFP-battery-with-600-mile-range-unveiled-by-VW-supplier.720397.0.html
Prototypes are easy. Scaling is hard. Let's revisit the issue when this is in mass production.

The real problem is what matters more isn't energy density by weight but by volume. You can have the lightest battery in the world, it does nothing if you can't fit it. In comparison, a few hundred lb of weight here or there isn't as important.
This is just straight up not true.. Tesla is spending HUNDREDS of millions to build their own batteries a simple Google search would tell you this, Nevada, Texas etc... All expansion projects for Tesla battery builds.
