Title: LG Gram 17 (2023): The lightweight laptop delivers a long battery life
Post by: Redaktion on May 12, 2023, 02:15:54
A low weight (ca. 1.4 kg, ~3 lb), an excellent battery life, and a matte 16:10 display (17 inches, 2,560 x 1,600 pixels) represent the highlights of the LG Gram 17. They are accompanied by two Thunderbolt 4 connections and a good keyboard.

I have the LG Gram 17Z990 (i7-8565U. WQXGA) that originally came with 8GB of RAM. I purchased it because it was upgradable and then proceeded to upgrade it to 40 GB of RAM. It's a great laptop.

I'm in the market for a new one given that this is now 5 years old.

However, the newer versions of the LG Gram 17 don't have upgradable parts. So this means that I won't be purchasing from them until this is possible.

It's quite unfortunate, because it's a fantastic laptop, and it works perfectly with Kubuntu Linux.

I think you can replace the SSD and add on the other slot another one, but that is it.

New CPUs greatly benefit from using LPDDR5 RAM which is why it's soldered onboard. You could say the standard has gotton higher since this wasn't always a requirement. Sure, you can find plenty Intel 13th Gen U/P-series laptops with expandable DDR5 slots, but only at the mid-range and lower price point.

So if getting RAM slots is more important to you than quality of display, keyboard, battery, weight and build quality for a laptop then by all means, vote with your wallet and show your support for modularity.
