Dell has quietly lowered the GeForce RTX 3060 TGP from 70 W to 65 W on the latest XPS 17 9720 series. The minor hit to graphics performance may be worth the more significant increase in CPU performance, however.

The older 9710 with the Tiger Lake CPU seems to be on average a lot faster than the newer 9720 in AIDA's CPU tests.
I use to love the xps line until they remove a good gpu off the xps15.
They can put a 3060 in the xps15 but stick the 3050 in it
I don't understand why they want to lower wattage on xps17. Asus and other brand can crank up the wattage even with smaller form factor.

I would have to look at it but the first thing that comes to mind is AVX-512. Alder Lake has lost it, it seems Intel even fuses the functionality these days to ensure that people can't enable it. The root of the problem is that only performance cores have it - you have to disable the smaller cores if you want to enable it. That's one thing where Alder Lake is going to be worse than Tiger Lake and it will show up in benchmarks that can utilize it.
I guess they might keep it in processors that only feature performance cores.
kliff- Dell has settled on a standard of 130w charging over its USB-C ports, which is probably part of why those models are power constrained.
These are also "ultrabooks" with physically limited cooling capacity.
When 250w power over USB-C finally arrives in laptops, you might see power caps raised on the XPS models.... but if you want a laptop which sucks the most power possible, you're just going to have to get a thicker model with improved cooling, there's no getting around physics.
Sorry but those sustained cpu results are still pretty terrible for a 12700H lmao especially for a laptop that's 2.2kg
