There are many different laptop designs, each with their own advantages and disadvantages. While this also applies to large, heavy laptops, there is such a thing as too big. Unfortunately, the Lenovo ThinkPad P17 G2 is a prime example for this. For the next generation, Lenovo should update its design to something that looks more recent.

So... A redesign would only cause even more drawbacks to the P17 G2. Thinner chassis would mean losing upgradeable RAM, WiFi, thinner heatsinks meaning more noise and heat, a poorer keyboard, poorer build quality with tonnes of flexing and creaking. Thinner doesn't mean better. Workstations are meant as workstations, not fashion jewellery like Apple's Macbooks which brands are copying from.
If it ain't broke, don't fix it.
And I keep reading "thick bezels" when it isn't thick at all. It's unreasonable to say thick bezels as a con in reviews.
Who said anything about thinner?
Keep the 3cm thickness, use better materials than plastic palmrest, make it lighter, invest in good cooling design, upgrade the hardware - display/speakers/mic/webcam/touchpad, change the vents position, get AMD CPU/GPU if not for the pros then for the lower prices, etc.
There is no perfect laptop. However, 9/10 17 inch laptops from other brands are all trying to be better in their own ways, for instance, innovating hinges like Asus or trying different fan assembly like Alienware.
Getting relatively worse every year and charging more for it is not anything to brag about, and I'm not just talking about the P17.
