Title: Google developing custom silicon for its Pixelbooks as it heads down a similar path to Apple
Post by: Redaktion on September 01, 2021, 12:27:23
Google is said to be developing custom chips for its Pixelbooks, according to Nikkei Asia. Although not a lot of details about the new chips have been revealed, they will be Arm-based like its new Tensor SoC developed for the forthcoming Pixel 6 range.

Great, more potentially close source ecosystem. Hopefully Qualcomm does not follow the same path, or Texas Instruments releases arm processor again.

Their Tensor chip (bad name) doesn't sound that interesting. I guess we'll have to see.

I don't see GOOG devices being more "closed source" than Qualcomm, Samsung, and others.

Ok, but unlike macOS, Chrome OS is useless for any serious work.. So pixelbooks, considering their price, are again only for hardcore google fans...

Unless Google works with Samsung to make Tensor/Exynos chip optimized for Chrome OS available for other OEMs to use on their Chromebooks as well, this is a dead project.

PixelBook at its price point is still a niche device for enthusiasts only. ARM needs to be good to a point where they can make a $300 Chromebook that rivals the $300 iPad in terms of both Chipset and Software.
