Samsung has announced the "industry-first" development of DRAM that combines DDR5 memory with the compute express link (CXL) connection. The OEM believes this kind of interface, based on PCIe 5.0, is the next big thing in datacenter, machine-learning and cloud computing, particularly when it comes to scalability.

It's worth mentioning that CXL is Intel's technology. It's not supposed to replace RAM as we know it. It's more of a PCIe replacement. PCIe is great within a PC. But it's not that good in big servers and especially clusters. It won't replace local memory, although a large HBM cache could eliminate the need for it (and AFAIK it can be used to pool such local memories). These modules will be used to create shared memory pools that can be accessed by many processors, simplifying data sharing. Instead of processors having local memory that is walled up. AFAIK Intel gave up the IP and it should be part of PCIe 6.0. CXL is just a stop-gap solution to avoid the longer wait. It's a sort of PCIe 5 with lower latency to facilitate memory sharing.
