Title: The Gigabyte AORUS RTX 3080 and RTX 3090 Gaming Boxes will provide the power of the Ampere architecture over a Thunderbolt 3 connection
Post by: Redaktion on November 17, 2020, 22:41:16
Gigabyte is readying to release new versions of its AORUS Gaming Box eGPU. The company plans to release GeForce RTX 3080 and GeForce RTX 3090 editions of the AORUS Gaming Box, which will both feature RGB lighting and plenty of connectivity. The RTX 3080 and RTX 3090 will only be capable of communicating with laptops at up to 40 Gbps, though.

At this point might as well build a complete system in something like a FormD T1 or even a Dan A4...

Which is a bit like saying you could buy a truck or a bus instead of using a trailer with your main car.

The idea behind eGPU cases is that you can use a powerful GPU with your PC/Mac - especially (if not exclusively) a laptop.
Yes, it's an extremely niche product. But that niche exists, so why not offer it?

External storage cases have been around for a long time - including pretty expensive RAID DAS solutions - and no one says that you should get a second PC instead.

But TB will severely bottleneck the GPU and the low-voltage APU as well. So your shiny RTX 3090 will become bottlenecked down to RTX 3060 in the best case. So what Anonyneko proposed to make much more sense BTW - the size won't be any bigger, but you can stick some 5800X + RX 6800X easily in such case and get around x2 pure GPU power compared to eGPU bottlenecked RTX 3090. Such enclosures make sense only for mid-level cards such as RTX 2060s / RX 5600 / RX 5700 / RX 6700 etc. Anything higher than that will be severely bottlenecked.
