Title: The Samsung Galaxy Note 9 was the last truly great Android flagship
Post by: Redaktion on June 21, 2020, 19:56:01
Samsung released the Galaxy Note 9 two years ago. Unlike most flagship phones from that era, however, the Note 9 still manages to look fresh, while offering premium features and performance, even by today's standards. And that, perhaps, is why it'll go down as the last truly great Android flagship.

Cannot agree more about all unique features we can't find now...
- No notch or punch hole
- Headphone jack
combined with flagship specs as the massive battery, the S pen which had at this time new features (taking photos, screen-off notes, useful for slide show...) and the 4k60hz support through the usb-c/hdmi
I bought it new for around 600€ and 2 months after his release (October 2018). Still working like a charm.
Samsung infinity display without punch hole introduced with the S8 is still (for me) the best design

The last great phone was the Samsung Galaxy Note 4.

From then on it went downhill. The Note 4 was a true power users phone, after that Samsung started taking away power user features like removable battery, used same processors as the older models, while charging a much higher price, to the point one has to wonder why the Note wasn't just renamed the Galaxy S++.

Counterpoint: I likey Note 10 even more than I liked my Note 9. I to be honest, the only change I don't like was moving the power button from the right side to the left side. Aside from that it's better in every way.

I love my Note 9 it's still got loads of life left in it for most uses day to day. But I cant say that about the battery. I had my Note9 since launch and accubattery says my battery capacity is more like 3253mah nearly 20%. I do charge it more often now. And I hate to think my next phone might come with a 3 year contract that seems the new norm.

Also Samsung will change the battery it was 77 quid but gone up now.

I switched to the note 10 earlier this year and I am still regretting it. The note 9 was a better phone in so many ways. And after this whole "putting ads in the native apps on our flagship phone" thing, the note 10 will be the last Samsung phone I purchase.

It's much better than my iphone8. It's my first android phone so there was a learning curve. It's a net improvement from my iphone even with the drawbacks like the fragile stylus. I bought this phone for the headphone jack and it's big screen for watching movies. I found it's pretty good for drawing too.

I have the note 9 and what I use it for is what it what not meant to do in reality.  I use it as my laptop with dex for the last 6 weeks.  I have the usb c hub with everything except for 100bt port.  I have my Surface Pro in my datacenter and I rdp if i need to use a regulator computer.  If seem to work so great that I don't miss my normal computer.  When I am out of the house then I rdp in.  Since I have the 512GB version I have all my data, but I need anything a have unlimited cloud drive.  I use opendrive.com and it unlimited and not like MS, Amazon, and google cloud.  It still 9.99 and I don't have to had to data local to my system, but can still access it with my note 9 like a client-server envirnment.

Look into it guys all the cloud providers are full of it opendrive works just like a server.

The Note 4 was the last flagship. Hundreds of Note 9 suffer from a green discoloration after one year of use. Please Google Note9,  s10 display issues.  The UI software bricked the screen display and samsung is NOT taking accountability. They are charging $350 for it.

Apart from all of that, the note series has never been a flagship completely unnecessary statement. The One Plus 8 Pro will also be great in 2 years at least the 12GB Ram and 256 rom version.

I absolutely loved the Note 9 ... but I have to say that I love the Note 10+ even more.  My issue (yes, singular) with the Note 9 was that the selfie cam was sub-par, and as a runner I have my phone in my FlipBelt and take it out for a post-run selfie and too often the Note 9 would have blurry or otherwise sub-optimal images (sure, you might say that should just deter me from too many selfies, but hey - always good to track progress, right?!?)

The Note 10+ has better selfie cam, and just ups the game everywhere.  Including the price, sadly - so the Note 9 was expensive ... but the 10+ was absurd.

So ... overall, Note user for life here :)

Poorly written article, author completely failed to explain why Note 9 is the last great android phone, they just compare it with other old phones but didn't care to compare note 9 with note 10 or latest Galaxy or lg phones or any other latest phone.
All I understood is that because it was last galaxy phone to have 3.5mm jack thats why it is great.
Rubbish.

This was a great article.  There really are no more flagship phones.  All the new flagships are expensive and lack useful features.  The last great flagship phones were the Note 4 and the LGV20.  They were the Swiss Army knives of phones.  They had everything:  nice screens, removable batteries, 3.5mm jack, IR blaster, FM Radio, etc.  Frankly, I use my phones for business, taking pictures, making and watching videos . I'm no gamer, so I don't give a darn about refresh rates, on screen fingerprint sensors, punch holes, or even build quality because I'm would buy a flagship made with a plastic frame once or even twice a year to have the newest processors.  I also cannot stand the Samsung curved screen.  It is an utter waste.  I want a wider flat screen that I can protect with a flat screen protector and a great phone cover that I can grip the phone by without touching the sides of the curved screen.   I hate these skinny tall phones.  I'd much rather have them wider. I want pure horsepower so I can get the job done quickly and all the features I mentioned above.  It seems Samsung and the other Android manufacturers are chasing Apple to their detriment.  The Note 9 will be the last Samsung phone I buy until they at least bring back the 3.5 jack.  I'd love to see a replacable battery and IR blaster too. I'll be buying the LG V60 next.  Hopefully Samsung will wake up and quit copying Apple and give it's customers what they really want and need.

To me the PWM flicker is a bit annoying and there is no option to switch to DC dimming. I ended up getting an LG G7 which is the last generation of flagships (expect for Asus) that uses an LCD panel instead of OLED.

Great article, arguely in enough note 9 flagship or not. I just pick up a mint silver note 9 3months ago at $370. Battery health 88%. I love it. I use headphone jack every day. I can not adjust myself enough to spend 1000dollars for a new phone.

Idk wtf yall are talking about. To fix the dimming you have to slide down notification bar and click on blue screen, lowering your brightness also helps. Aside from that the note 9 is a great phone. Mine alone has crapped on iPhone 11 and xr picture wise and performance I had a side by side comparison. The selfie cam is pretty good if you remember to clean the front camera. I run emulators like dolphin and PSP, I'm currently trying to get ps2 to work on it. Ive been able to record music on here as well Like lyrics and the instrumental and the sound is not bad at all. Hands down this has been the best phone I ever laid my hands on. The multitask function is so smooth and man If you know how to tweak your own phone. You would see why it is MUCH MUCH better than any phone of it's time up to a gen ahead.

The flickering can be observed easier by using another phone's slo-mo camera mode to shot a video of Galaxy Note 9's screen.

For iPhones and some other OLED phone models, when the brightness is set to max or high, the flickering will be gone. However, for Galaxy Note 9 it remains there even at 100% brightness.

A Galaxy Note without a heart rate monitor and a headphone jack is not a great phone. The Note 9 is the last one.
ANY phone without an S pen or DEX is not a  great phone

Are you ABSOLUTELY high out of your mind?? I mean seriously, without going into ridiculous amounts of specs let's think about a few things. How about the price for one thing? How about a God-awful fingerprint scanner? This giant battery you speak of lasts less time than any pixel phone just from the sheer amount of crap that Samsung puts on their phones. Dare I say one + ? If I remember the specs correctly, next to no notch, HD screen, 8:45 processor, in-screen fingerprint, and the option to have 256 GB storage with 8 GB of RAM for less than $700? And you want to talk about the Note 9? Get a life. I'd take a OnePlus or a Pixel over any Samsung any day of the week!

I Agree with this article. The Galaxy Note 9 has never failed since day one. From running multiple apps in memory that don't restart when you switch after hours to running smoothly at all times. This phone is truly a performance beast. Great camera, screen and most importantly S-pen and 3.5mm jack. After a bought a Note 9, I told myself I'll never buy another phone without an S-pen. Most people have no idea the functionality that their missing out with these new S-pens that double as remote controls. I have created and edited so many work documents on the fly thanks to S-pen and DeX. The Note 9 is a power user device. Even though there is a high performance mode which supposedly overclocks the device's processor, this phone is already a beast straight out of the box. Samsung needs to get back to what made them great which is offering practicality and innovative solutions to their customers and not chasing down crazy trends like removing 3.5mm jack and constantly moving the selfie camera into the screen. Some people didn't like the face recognition and claimed it was not secure. We loved it for the practicality. Talk about unlocking your phone when your hands are wet. Combine that with google assistant/Bixby and you've got limitless possibilities. I hope they bring back the 3.5mm jack on their newer phone. The Note 9 has not disappointed in 2 years and we will have to retire the beast soon. The successor needs to be at least equally great if not greater that the Note 9.

Apart from the stylus, which can't be helped, the Sony would be a proper replacement. If willing to accept severely curved screens and/or punchholes, then there are other replacements.

Oneplus, a so-called "enthusiast brand", f***ed its users long ago by dropping the jack soon after Apple. It fell off my radar since.

The truth about burn in on AMOLED is that each individual pixel has its own lifespan, as you use up some pixels and not others, you get the impression of burn in. Burn in on AMOLED can be fixed by simply inverting the image that has been burnt in. Though I would make sure you know what color specifically.

Overall to reduce burn in, you should avoid colors that use blue (which has shortest lifespan). That includes purple and white.

Stick to using green and red as much as possible in your UI and consider using blue light filter mode which will help you with sleep as well. Of course black is the best but that technically isn't a color. Use darker colors over brighter ones too.

I have a Galaxy Note 3 and Note 4 that I've used every day since they came out and it has no visible burn in. Simply because I took good care of them by using dark themes.

No idea how you reached that conclusion. Asus with their ROG brand really put together a few products with impact, with the sheer number of features and knowing what not to skimp(e.g. the jack).Razer OTOH produced irrelevant and non-competitive smartphones from the start.

On my S9, picked it over Note 9 because I didn't need the stylus and figured it'd be too big even for my bigger than average hands to use onehanded. I can say it has been extremely difficult to find another phone I am interested in. Xperia 1 ii is close, though I have yet found another phone that is as feature complete and for its time as advanced as the S8-N9 period sammies were.

I agree wholeheartedly. In my opinion the Note 9 is an icon and the last no holds barred, everything but the kitchen sink, all inclusive, no compromises, Note. I do alot of mobile photography and wanted to put the camera improvements of the Note 20 Ultra to the test, but I was unwilling to trade in my still pristine Note 9 for the pre-order discount. So I bided my time, waited for the prices to drop and scoured the websites Offer Up and Swappa until I found a good deal. No matter what devices I add to my line up, my Note 9 will be one of my favorites.
