Dell has finally launched the XPS 15 9500 laptop powered by 10th gen Intel Core H-series chips and the NVIDIA GTX 1650 Ti Max-Q GPU. This year's XPS 15 comes with a much needed re-design including a 16:10 display, top-firing speakers, absence of USB Type-A ports, and finally, a proper webcam placement. $1750 and 8 GB of RAM and 256GB SSD in 2020, that´s just insane. They'd better have amazing thermals to make this an option.
I'm officially done with companies screwing around and removing useful ports. The chassis is large enough to support full-size USB ports... so why not have them?!
They'll be pulling the headphone port off laptops before long.

No USB-A, no HDMI, smaller battery, and no reduction in weight. Why is this the "redesign we've been waiting for"? Surely, this is the redesign we have been dreading.

Dell shows a complete lack of understanding of what made the XPS so great and stripped all the best parts out. Removal of the USB A and HDMI ports will turn this sleek design into a dongle monster and even then, 3 USB C ports is not enough. Plug in your charger, a second display and a mouse and suddenly you can't even share a file with a USB drive anymore. The reduction in battery capacity is another blow in the face for XPS fans. But hey, if Dell wants to abandon its fan base to chase the Apple fans, go ahead, I just won't be buying from them anymore.
They took the apple route of offering their vision for the product instead of what people actually need.
USB-C is great and once adoption becomes more widespread it could be feasible to live with no USB A and no hdmi, that future is far away unfortunately so this is just stupid, now everyone will need to buy a bunch of dongles that either break, are forgotten at home when needed or simply lost, makes no sense
I will probably get this one for personal use because of the 16:10 screen. I already have a docked ThinkPad for work, so the limitations of the new XPS don't bother me too much.

I agree this move is stupid but you won't be out of ports like you describe, usb c is not designed like that.
A single type c port is able to carry power, connect a usb 2.0 mouse, connect a display and transfer data to your zip drive while delivering full performance and bandwith on every one of this connections. You do need to carry a stupid dongle with you all the time (technically a docking station, but this kind of configuration is so common and small these days that it's almost the same as dongle) which makes no sense, but you do have enough ports.

Looks good, 16:10 display is nice but no OLED option is a real downgrade from last XPS 15, no buy for me.
The giant trackpad is going to get into the way of typing. Even with the great trackpad software and palm rejection on the Macbooks, they still get plenty of complaints. The selection of ports is stupid to exclude USB-A.
Competing with Apple doesn't mean to become Apple. A lot of good things in this laptop including the 16:10 screen, new speakers and hopefully reliable keyboard, but don't need to copy the drawbacks of Apple.
Use your own brain, decide for yourself and stop copying Apple's stupid decisions.

Well, you just sometimes need to rip the band-aid off. MacBooks have certainly accelerated that future. USB-C has been a reality for quite some time. So, I hope we're talking about legacy accessories and nobody is buying USB-A devices anymore if they can avoid it. Or they shouldn't complain. That is if their machine has enough USB-C ports. Since there are the "neither here nor there" laptops that offer both but perhaps not enough of either. What do you need that's not available with USB-C? Today. It's 2020, not 2015.
Sometimes, it's better to just buy a new cable rather than a dongle. Sure, for something like a conference room where the cable is already there, a dongle might be appropriate. For me, no big deal. I can just keep it in the laptop bag in case I need it. Or even better, one of the small port expanders. Not ideal but not a big deal. For me, it would be occasional use, not daily use.
pitty it uses inferior CPU, which generates tons of heat and produces security bugs as a product.

Why are they showing battery life for core i5 + 86Wh combo, when you cannot even configure i5 with 86Wh battery.

and unless you have a keyboard with a removable cable, you need USB A, USB C is a rarity on displays,... You need to go out of your way to get USB C and often have to give up quality for it. On top of this, why not include a single USB A and HDMI port for convenience until it's completely integrated? Because I haven't been in a meeting room that had a USB C projector or even a single USB C stick in the room.

We're talking about laptops, not desktops. Desktops usually have a plenty of USB-A ports. On the contrary, USB-C ports can be few and far between. Personally, I tend to connect keyboard and mouse to display (I like displays with USB hubs). So, USB-A works perfectly. It's trivial to swap the cable between display and computer to suit the computer. If we're talking about fixed set-up at home for a laptop, a dock makes perfect sense (surely you don't want to connect everything one by one). Again, USB-A is not a problem. And on the go, a lot of people use wireless. There are plenty of Bluetooth mice that don't require a dongle. Yes, if you want to use a wired mouse on the go, you've got tough luck. Surely, that's a small minority (one into which I used to belong - I was afraid I would forget the mouse somewhere if it was wireless).
Up to 25 houes battery life is misleading because the i5-10300H model do not have an option to put a 86WHr battery in it.

Dell XPS 7500 - newest processors on paper, still slower than MBP16.
Same fingerprint-magnet palm rest. Newer, more expensive CPUs, that are still not a match for Ryzen. Speakers and webcam still sucks. Battery life worse even than old XPS. No USB-A ports. No HDMI. Massive power brick. Newer graphics card, which will probably perform the same as old, but we've got to show we're innovating. But we've got SD card and Wifi-6 (who cares that no one has wifi6 routers and if the internet behind the router is still slow even for wifi5?) Oh, and the price is higher than the previous model, just as you asked.
Exec: - See? Was that hard? let's push them to the market!!!
