Title: Lenovo ThinkPad T14, T14s & X13: AMD Ryzen 4000 versions do not feature Thunderbolt after all
Post by: Redaktion on April 09, 2020, 16:52:08
When Lenovo announced the new 2020 ThinkPad lineup in late February, the addition of Thunderbolt 3 to the AMD versions of the new ThinkPad T14, ThinkPad T14s and ThinkPad X13 was big news. Two months later and close to the release of the new devices, it turns out that the initial spec-sheet was wrong: Thunderbolt remains Intel-exclusive.

my biggest concern was screen options.
they say 400 nit low power and 500 nit, which im fine with. no data about color range tho. typical hidden parameters from a manufacturer.

Lenovo's 16:9 screen ratio is useless for professional use anyway.

While it's true that Thunderbolt wasn't really available on AMD systems in the past, that hasn't been the case for a while. After all, there are desktop motherboards which feature TB3 AFAIK. What they typically lack is Thunderbolt certification from Intel. But they have the hardware. I believe it was with TB3 that Intel opened up. At any rate, it's a temporary problem. USB4 should essentially be re-branded TB3.

While lack of thunderbolt is a bit upsetting, it isn't a big deal overall. I am more annoyed by the keyboard layout. The small arrow keys and poorly placed page up and page down makes it a deal breaker.

@A, the keyboard layout on the 14" Thinkpads has been the same for a while, now.

Who really even uses TB3 ?

I don't, even though my laptop has TB3.

It's mostly just professionals and their expensive high-performance TB3 docking stations. Those are the kind of people willing to pay a premium for the better version of much cheaper alternatives -- you know, just the *effin* people that would even buy these 1000€+ AMD Thinkpads. So... "no biggie".

What a shame, I was planning to buy a Ryzen T14 and a Legion BoostStation so that I could use it for work and gaming, and forget about having a desktop altogether, after all it's much easier to move around with a laptop, a mouse, an eGPU enclosure and headphones than a laptop, 2.1 speakers, screen, tower, keyboard and one or two mice.

Same here. Was hoping to get a Ryzen 4000 laptop with Thunderbolt 3 to use with my eGPU. Guess Lenovo is off my list to look out for.

Was planing to upgrade our whole company (80+ workstations) with Thunderbolt 3 enabled Ryzen 4000 Thinkpads. Also with eGPU boxes for our mechanical engineering with desktop Quadro GPUs. Very unfortunate. Now one has to choose a CPU with ancient 14nm process which will cause the housing to melt after 0.01ms on turboboost to have Thunderbolt 3 enabled.
